It's not easy being in a long-distance relationship, especially if your significant other is serving overseas in the armed forces. But one soldier's girlfriend and family have come up with a novel temporary solution: a cardboard cutout of him that she takes along nearly everywhere.Staff Sgt. Patrick Thomas is a pararescueman in the Air Force. It's a dangerous and elite job that requires him to jump out of airplanes and go on solo rescue missions in territory where he is infrequently welcome.
Needless to say, his girlfriend, Anne, and his family both miss and worry about him terribly. His mom sends him so many care packages that she's on a first-name basis at the post office, but his sister came up with a much more creative idea while texting Patrick's girlfriend one night.
The two had become very close, communicating frequently about how much they missed Patrick. His sister jokingly suggested that Anne carry a life-size cardboard cutout of him with her everywhere. Instantly the two realized it was a brilliant idea and began making plans to take pictures of Patrick in wacky situations so he could see himself at home with his girlfriend and his family. Their name for the caper? "Operation Perk Up Patrick."
Anne has taken Patrick with her to the beach; he greeted her when she arrived at the airport, where they were met with suspicious glances until people found out what was happening; they've gone to the forest; and he's been groped by old ladies. He even met cardboard cutout President Obama, which is quite an honor for a cardboard cutout. She's going to all his favorite vacation spots, taking pictures, then sending them to him a few at a time, and he loves it.
The best part of all? "He doesn't talk back, he doesn't argue," says Anne. With a boyfriend like that it might be hard to go back to the real thing when he gets home.

This is just too weird and inappropriate. This has nothing to do with her love for him. This girl is seeking attention. This little antic of hers is not at all funny or cute. This poor guy is over there risking his life for all of us over here and she is walking around with a life size cut out of him in swimming trunks, posing for pictures and laughing. Thats ridiculous, sorry. Its one thing if she keeps it in the privacy of her home but to take it all over the place? Give me a break!! Maybe if he were wearing his combat attire and she was taking it around with her then people would be able to understand this whole thing. She seems to be the only one that knows whats going on as the onlookers have no idea who the guy in the cut out is. God Bless America. I pray for all to return home unharmed and soon.

LOL Single Really not anything I would do. But to each their own. I was in the army I wouldnt want my girl carrying a cut out of me but there are some guys who would like that Idea. Either because the are alittle insecure or controlling. Or maybe she puts on airs to hide what she is really doing while her boy is away.

I think it's a unique (albeit wacky) way to say "wish you were here." Good for them - Deployments are hard and this is a nice way to lighten the mood a bit. A big thank you for your service and sacrifice to Patrick and his family.

When my husband was deployed, we did something similar for my son, who was 7 at the time. We just used his upper body. It's called a Flat Daddy. "Daddy" went to school plays and holiday dinners...He even went with us to church and "slept" at the head of my son's bed. Daddy loved hearing about all the places he had been, even though he couldn't really be there. We also created a doll from a full-body shot. The Daddy Doll was about a 12-inch stuffed doll that my son took EVERYWHERE. It was a long 18 months and it was comforting for my children to have "Dad" even when Dad couldn't really be there. I don't, for one minute, regret "looking foolish" for being creative enough to help my children through a difficult time!

I want everybody to know that every one has a different coping mechanism in dealing with stress. If the stress out weighs the coping skills then one can be evaluated for psycho issue. So far she is coping with the state of missing one that she loves. There is nothing wrong with her cardboard boyfriend. I also want the average Americans to be matured and grow up for critical thinking skills rather than being naive and concrete in their taught processes.

There are a lot of people on here who are saying that they "don't get it." Think about it this way, it's a way to lighten up her boyfriend's day. Needless to say, I'm sure he wishes he could be with her where ever she goes. So seeing pictures of them "together" is the next best thing. I think it's sweet. I used to email my boyfriend and tell him where I was and what I was doing, because I knew he would rather be with me than in Iraq. I wish them the best and hope that he will come home safe and soon.

First of all some of you readers clearly cannot read or maybe you need to go back and read the real story of how this came about in the first place again.
Number one, it was NOT her idea, it was the sister of her boyfriend's idea and she got to talking to her about it and then she decided it would be a great idea.
Number two, the boyfriend loves it. This is to help him and shows him that she is waiting for him when he gets home and that she miss's him. By her taking him to places she goes that he cannot and taking pics, it's as if he is there with her and then she sends him the pics and tells him all about her day and then he can dream about it for a while and forget the horrible place he is in.
MY god people, clearly none of you realize what our men and women go though over there in Iraq and Afganastan. I can tell you as my son has been twice and they all come home with ptsd... Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.
So, they need to smile, whatever it takes or however silly it may seem so others. Who cares as long as they can have a little bit of happiness for however brief that may be each day they are there.
