In a perfect world, you'd know Caster Semenya as the teenage woman who can run half a mile in under two minutes. What you probably know her as is the athlete whose muscular physique prompted officials to order a test to verify her gender. But her femininity isn't a question at all in the "after" shots of her makeover from South African magazine You.Smiling Despite a Scandal
The makeover proved to be a learning experience for Semenya, 18, who admits she doesn't know how to put on makeup. The photo shoots also gave her the rare opportunity to get dressed up, something a girl who's in school and race training doesn't get the chance to do very often.
Says Semenya, "I didn't do this to prove a point but rather to have fun. I don't give a damn what people say about me. I like me the way I am, and who cares what other people say?"
Regardless of the controversy, South Africa has embraced its daughter since she took gold in the 800-meter race at the World Championships in Germany last month, She even met with Nelson Mandela, who praised her.

Testing Comes Under Fire

Presently the results of the gender test required by the International Association of Athletics Federation are still being analyzed, so an independent panel of experts has been called in to decipher the results. Her coach quit this week, admitting that he didn't tell Semenya that her gender was being tested -- he told her she was being screened for steroids and other illicit substances.
Semenya may suffer from a rare chromosomal disorder that causes her body to produce too much testosterone. This isn't the first time an athlete's gender has been questioned or a genetic condition has wreaked havoc on qualifying tests. Whether or not that extra dose of testosterone gives her an edge over her competitors will have to be decided.
The results of the medical test will not be made public, since they warrant patient confidentiality. Regardless of what the results say, there's at least one teenage girl out there who likes herself just the way she is -- and we love that.
UPDATE: The latest reports say that the test results show Semenya to be intersex, with both male and female organs. The talented 18-year-old has no womb or ovaries and her testosterone levels are much higher than average. We just feel bad for her having to live this whole thing out in the public eye.

1. "She" appears to have an "Adams Apple" and
2. "her" hands also appear to be male shaped (three middle fingers all nearly same length rather than middle one being longer as in females' hands).
3. "She" has no hips
4. or breast development.
5. "Her" arms and legs are proportionally longer in relation to "her" body than a female's usually are.
No amount of "makeover" can change those external genetic features that imply
"she" is male.
Undescended testes and an underdeveloped penis can give the
appearance of female genitalia, even to some physical exams. A simple
ultrasound would determine quickly whether "she" has a womb and
ovaries or undescended male parts. My bet is on the latter. Also a
simple chromosome check (not a check of testosterone levels) would
show whether “she” is actually genetically female (which I doubt).
“She” appears to be a rather attractive young man who makes up into a
very unattractive female impersonator.

Well, this runner still looks totally like a man. There are many comments saying that looks do not matter. That is not the point. Not many are saying the runner is ugly , just that there are obvious gender questions. I have often thought it was not fair for those with sex change operations to compete as women. Hormones and such make a difference in performance and when there is an imbalance it is not fair for some to compete with women. Just having breasts or not having a male organ is not the problem. Testing is in line here because the runner looks, acts, talks like a man. This could be a hoax.

It has alrrady been established "she" has a conditions which causes her body to produce too much testosterone. Question is should this prohibit her from competeing against normal female athletes, since testerone is essential to building muscle.
Hey, isn't testosterone produce in the testes??? hmmm

Testosterone is a hormone present in men AND women, it is produced in several glads in the body (including the testes in men-that is why men have much higher levels of testosterone than women). In all genders (male, female, and intersex) testosterone regulates (among other things) aggression and sexual desire. Try taking a basic anatomy or human sexuality class before you talk about things you don't understand.

Wow! It's amazing to me how shallow some of you are. Take a look in the mirror, I'm sure you all have "abnormalities" of your own. Some you can hide, some you can't.....But, it does not change the fact that GOD CREATED US ALL. And He makes NO mistakes. It's ashame that she's not being praised for her talents...I just pray that she keeps the same attitude she has now and not give a damn what people think as long as she knows the truth.
Caster, I applaud you. Don't be distracted or brainwashed by the foolishness around you!!!

This young woman is great. Unfortunately there are some people who just want to put anyone down. Do yourselves a favor. Don’t look at yourselves in the mirror in the morning. You might just pull out the 357 magnum and use it!

This young lady just happens to have a very superior physique. Neither the European, Asian, Indian, Latin, African or any other physique in truth subscribe to perfection. Not in the grand scheme of things. Looks, as in glamour and sheer so-called femininity play a role to many as a means of attracting admiration. So does prowess. Prowess came before looks, though, as those who are most "able" are most likely to survive. Developing a thin muscular frame will not help a diva to thrive in an unexpected and unlikely but possible life threatening situation of nature (stranded alone on a boat, deserted isle, woods, etc) but it might help the diva to get on the cover of a magazine. This woman is an amazing work of art and as close to perfection as the human body can get. I am sure that God is more impressed wih her and her humility than He is with those who think that she should be more like them.

I don't want to comment on if I think the individual is attractive or not. This is not the issue. There are rules in competition and they must be followed no matter who you are. In my opinion, the testing is to make sure that there is not a possible doping voliation, hiding of true gender and to see if there is a natural difference in her genetic makeup compared to other females. If this is natural, and the individual is indeed female, then she should be able to compete as a female. God gives us what we have. Some have more, some have less.

You said everything I wanted to, so instead of repeating you, I just wanted to say thanks for finding those words.
I thought it was insulting that they made her "girlie" to prove a point. That has nothing to do with who she is or where-in her talents lie.
We're changing her to fit our own ideas.

You say it looks like a duck etc......Well that's very simple minded of you but then you don't have to be excessively intelligent to make derogatory remarks about another individual. If you can speak you don't need any intelligence of which I do believe you are in this category.
The part of the world that she is from is poverty stricken and she is lean because of this. She dores not have any bulging musles as if she a weight lifter. Now I will admit that the short hair did make her face resemble a man, but taht does not make her a man. As for the muscles in her ab musles this is the in thing in this country for women to have abdominals musles showing so where do get off calling her a man. Then too I must ask have you seen her walk, talk, or observed how she acts? No you have not, and what's at the bottom of all this criticism is racial bigotry you have done is read this article about black female athlete and decided to use this opportunity to attack black person. You can find something wrong with anyone or anything on this earth.
They found something wrong with the only person who lived and died perfect...Jesus...so it is nothing outstanding for tht people of this deranged society to find something wrong with the imperfect co- inhabitants of this country , this earth. I wonder is your physical stature? fat, 56 "waist, beer belly, fat chest with breast like a female???? You who are making the derogatory comments need to be put under the spot light...but you wouldn't dare do that.

1. She has a very deep voice if you listen to her speaking
2. Her muscle development is very masculine compared to the other runners in her category who presumably have similar training regimens
No one is trying to make a judgment on her beauty, gender identity, sexual orientation or whatever -- at least I hope not. They are just trying to determine actual gender -- whether she should be competing with men or women. For purposes of athletics (unlike almost all other aspects of life), self-identification is not dispositive.
I hope it turns out she is just naturally producing too much testosterone vs. being technically "male". But if I had to bet, I'm guessing she is technically male but raised female and self-identifies as such. It's hard enough to find out something like that, but how about finding it out in front of the entire world!
