I have a confession to make. I almost always pee with the door open. I don't know how I got into this habit. I never really thought much about it until I realized that my friends ALWAYS shut and lock the door. Even when they're at my house and we're the only two people there. I thought maybe they didn't trust me. What am I gonna do? Run in there and give them wedgies?
Turns out, most people grow up in more modest homes, where people wore bathrobes and towels and never walked around naked or left bathroom doors open.
I'm one of four kids and, though not officially nudists, no one in my family was ever shy. If you tried to lock the bathroom door, within minutes someone would be banging on the door to get in. Someone might be showering, while another person was peeing and another blow-drying their hair all at the same time. Privacy and modesty were concepts that just didn't exist, and I never thought to question it. It was just the way it was.
Click here for the reasons I like to pee with the door open.
1. Closing the door is totally unnecessary. Wasted energy. Saves time.
2. It's easier for me to keep talking to whomever is there with me if the door is open.
3. My cats love to come up for a scratch while I'm peeing and if I shut the door I'd miss that one-on-one time with them.
4. Easier to escape in the event of an emergency or natural disaster.
5. It's kind of a bonding thing. It means I trust you and am comfortable with you.
6. Have a better view of the dust and cat hair under my bed and know when it's time to vacuum.
7. Easier to hear if the phone is ringing or someone is at the door.
8. Better air circulation.
9. Don't get germs on my hands from touching the door knob.
10. Makes it easier to yell to my boyfriend when I realize I have run out of toilet paper and need him to bring me a roll.
What do you think? Do you like to leave the door open or closed? Under what circumstances do you think it's OK to leave the door open, and when is it just wrong?
I mean, I read online that a woman was having issues with her mother-in-law peeing with the door open. I wouldn't leave the door open in front of my boyfriend's parents. I draw the line at their house. I don't mind if a random stranger walks in on me in a public restroom, but I don't need to give Dr. Zickel a friggin' heart attack.

As a mother of 2, I can totally relate. Although my kids are a little older now & much better than they use to be about it! NO MATTER WHAT, they always need MOM when shes doing her duty. LOL the only time I can shower freely without hearing voices thru the curtain is while they are in school! I dont completely shut my bathroom door either! If it isnt my children yelling for me, its my husband, & if it isnt them the cat MEOWS & MEOWS until I come back into sight. My husband use to be weirded out by my leaving the door wide open, hes learned that Im far too much in a rush 24/7 with kids to even realize its open half the time. Now of course I do NOT leave it open if theres something other than just a quick pee thats just GROSS all the way around LOL Ive had my share of seeing little bodies hanging off of the toilet screaming for me when its "time to wipe mommy!" Besides that back to the article, I dont see anything wrong with leaving the door open if its your own home, I certainly would not do so in someone elses, or in a public place. And only with select few in my home would I do so anyhow, like my Mother, my best friend or cousin.

A little mystery goes a long way... your significant other doesn't need to know EVERYTHING about you - maybe they don't want to know everything...
We have a closed door policy in my house (no locks) and you must knock before entering for every room. Even though we were an all girl house for a decade - we showed each other respect. And my daughters learned a little modesty, not a bad thing.

My girlfriend feels completely justified when she has to 'go' - whether I am visiting or on the phone with her. She doesn't even think about the other person's feelings or 'uncomfortableness'. I promise, nothing you have to say has to be said while you are defecating on the toilet. Show some manners.

So little integrity in this world today! I don't even appreciate hearing someone say out loud "I need to go pee". How very crude!

Look, doesn't matter if you like it or not, but peeing with the door open is not about the person doing it is about the people hearing it. Personally I think it is also a matter of respect to the people around you, especially if you are in other ppl's houses. of course house full of kids and all that can seem like a good excuse, but it's not...it's a matter of how you educate that kid to have patience and give you the privacy you need. kids grow up and soon they will need their privacy. everybody needs privacy and not to teach that to kids is a big mistake.
however, every body has their own view, and I really don't care, as long as I don't have to put up with someone peeing / ... with the door open and hear / smell things like that. i have my own to hear and smell ....lol
a for the cats in the bathroom......especially the ones crawling in the pants when you sit on the toilet. That is so disgusting! Think of all that cat hair getting near ur private parts and then who knows where, deeper in ur body. yaakk u should get your head checked out.

In my household (Me, my brother and two sisters) I ALWAYS pee with the door open. Its not because I am too lazy to close the door but because I feel comfortable around them. Eventually my sister comes in and starts talking to me and my brother will stand my the door and tell me something. Now if I am dropping a turd or showering I will shut it. I noticed that other people commenting with large families and 1 or 2 bathrooms privacy became non existent...I actually like peeing with the door open but no longer can do that since I am living in a new home with new mates....

Intimacy. That's what it creates. Waking up, me with nothing on, my girlfriend in her little shirt and panties, is the perfect time. She likes to reach over and give me a hand. LIterally. What's the big deal? If this is the person you love, the person you love to make love to, everything has already been seen countless times anyway. So why not have a little fun and more shared intimacy together?

I come from a very modest family, always shut the bathroom door (and lock it), always cover yourself with bathrobes or towels and so on. But I started dating my boyfriend about 2 1/2 years ago and him and his family (he still lives with them) were the total opposite! They always leave the door open when they go to the bathroom, whether it is 1 or 2, and they have no problem walking around naked, or in their underwear (not when I'm around though!). My bf doesn't see any problem in seeing his parents nude where the thought horrifies me.
It's quite funny though. :)

as a commercial driver i am subject to DOT random Drug tests, and that means peeing into a speciman bottle, not in the toilet and absolutly no flushing toilet. and the DOT wants to mandate that the driver be watched as they pee to insure that the pee in the bottle is thier own pee and also that its pee from right here and right now. (no doctored up specimans).
Well for some reason i have what is called shy bladder syndrome and cqnt seem to pee on demand, even tjhough i have nothing to hide. And if i know a stranger is watching or can watch, i will try to use a stall with a door rather then pee in a urinal.
But in my house I can pee with the door open.
strange the way we all have grown up with some very different experiences with the outhouse , watercloset, bathroom experiences.

That's funny. Ever since I was younger I peed with the door closed, but if someone knocked on the door I had no qualms about opening it and discussing whatever needed to be discussed. My mom and I use to have our best conversations while in the bathroom. Me and my current girlfriend pee and poo in front of each other, why, because I have 1 bathroom in my apartment and sometimes privacy is optional.

I use the bathroom with the door open as well except for #2. It is for a no embarrassment zone. Who wants to smell that stuff?

Thanks for the discussion, CJ. If it's your home, you make the rules.
I grew up the youngest in a one bathroom house where we always shut the door to pee. There were numerous times when I was little that my older sister couldn't wait and would come in when I was taking a bath. She'd wrap a towel around herself, drop her drawers, and pee. When I had to go when sis was in the bathtub, I'd do the same thing - sit on the can and pee (didn't bother with the towel, though). I didn't feel comfortable standing to pee with her there because of the pee noise, yet I didn't care about dropping my pants in front of her. Mom would always make us wait when she was in the bathroom, and we weren't admitted until she was done. Once I got to be 11 or 12, mom instructed us to check with everyone to see if they needed to use the bathroom before we took a bath or shower. At elementary school, there were regimented bathroom breaks where the entire class went at one time - boys in one line, girls in another. I always opted for the stalls instead of the urinals and later realized that I was pee shy.
Many years later, I mostly overcame being pee shy and now have no problem using a urinal in a public bathroom. I still feel inhibited in a private home to stand at a toilet in a bathroom that is right near a living room full of people where they will hear me pee, so I sit and do it quietly. Some of my guy friends are the total opposite. They leave the door open in their homes, when they visit me or our other friends, and pee standing up. Anyone there can hear the entire process. It used to embarrass me, but later came to realize that everyone grew up differently. I have one friend with 2 teen kids, a boy and a girl. His son has peed in the hall bathroom with the door wide open several times while I've been there with everyone else at home. No one paid any attention to the noise, so it must be the norm in that home. For some people, peeing requires no more privacy than washing the hands or brushing the teeth. The door should always be shut for # 2 just becuase of the smell!
