Is Lauren Bacall, the star of "The Big Sleep" and "To Have and Have Not" really on Twitter? We think so. For one thing, she writes like an 84-year-old woman confuddled by the technology in front of her -- her first post being "I can't get this God dam thing to work!"For another, she writes about real projects she's considering and her real grandchildren. She also doesn't write very well. But no matter. Because if we had to pick a role model for our golden years, better believe we'd pick her. Why?
(Update: Some sources are reporting that the account is fake -- but that's not going to stop us from appreciating the wit and wisdom we're super-willing to attribute to her.)
She owns her flaws
Lauren Bacall smokes, but when she received criticism from her fans about it, her only real reaction was as follows: "The good thing about being 84 is that I can smoke as much as I want."
She respects the classics
Not only does she warn followers that if they haven't seen Fellini's "8 1/2," they'll "be condemned to hell," but when forced to watch "Twilight" by her granddaughter, she gave her daughter a copy of "Nosferatu." "Now thats a vampire film!" she Twittered.
She's not afraid to try new things
And it's not just that she's on Twitter -- it's that she's thinking about getting a cat and being in a Quentin Tarantino movie. How many 84-year-olds do you know who are willing to take those sorts of risks?
Conclusion: No one has more sass and brass than Lauren Bacall. We should all be so lucky to live so well.

BACALL, IS JUST A WOMEN WITH A BAD HABIT, SURE SHE MADE SOME MOVIES AND WAS MARRIED TO BOGART. SHE HAS LIVED LONG ENOUGH TO DO WHAT SHE WANTS, NO ONE NEEDS TO JUDGE HER , BUT WE DON'T HAVE TO ACT ALL STAR STRUCK . If living to 84 and smoking your brains out all the while is what she wants that's her business, But if she said "I kicked the nasty stinky habit" I would think more of it. My own Mom is a chain smoker @ 80 years old in a small apt and I can't wait to get out in the fresh air. she has all sorts of breathing problems but won't admitt it. For the SAKE OF HER WEED.

She was a classy actress and oozed sexuality. Like her I love the old classic movies.. I am 80 but I do not smoke but I cuss like hell and have no respect for politicians at all.
I would question he choice of men after Bogey. But hell it is her life. Smoke baby smoke.

I named my daughter Lauren after you, Ms. Bacall. My boyfriend said I looked like you and had spunk like you. I proved it after he left!

I don't have a problem with smokers smoking or their rights, but their rights come to a screeching grinding halt if I have to be affected by their smoking.
Ever hear of second hand smoke?
It does kill just like the real thing.
So don't whine to me about rights, I have the right to live smoke free.

No one is contesting your right to "live a smoke free life" as you put it - but the reality is - whether you like it, or not - people that smoke have the right to live a smoking life if they are grown, and wish to. Until people like you ( no bashing meant here!) are willing to replace/pay the billions of taxes and revenue that cigarettes, pipes, cigars generate, smoking will be legal. This duplicious government of ours is talking health and concern out of one side of it's mouth, while reaping tons of money off the very substance it decries. Sort of like non-smokers. They absolutely hate smoking and smokers, but like the witch hunters, need them to feel righteous and good about themselves. No matter how f'd up their own lfe is, or what they themselves are addicted to - cheating, gambling, drinking, driving recklessly...and on and on.

One of the classiest dames ever. Wish she'd write another book - maybe she doesn't "tweet" well, but the woman can turn out one hella bio - and what a life she's lived! And yes, at your age, you're entitled to do anything you damn well please. You have my deepest admiration, Ms. Bacall - as a person, a woman, an actress, wife, mother, and grandmother. Bravo!

I have a 40's Look magazine cover of LB hanging hin my living room. She's one of the greatest and they sure don't come like her any more. I'm very pleased to see all of the nice comments about her and not a bunch of people bashing her about smoking. It is in the genes, you know. Rock on Lauren

Being a "Boomer", I too can attest to the class, and stylish grace of Ms. Bacall, and the many women of her time. These were sassy, sexy sirens in a time when being one was "scandalous". They oozed sensuality without the need to be sleazy - or naked. They were always soft and femminine, yet could hold their own against the likes of Bogart, Wayne, Brando, Gable and other top-notch leading men. Ms. Bacall is class personified. These wanna-be starlets today could learn much wisdom from her, on how to act, how to maintain dignity, how to achieve longevity, and respect.

Hey Betty,
As a member of your tribe, I just wish to tell you that you should get a cat. I have had at least one in my house for the last 45 years and they are wonderful. I can assure you that you will be happy after bringing one in........

An aside here - I think the poster that (semingly) took offense at Ms. Bacall being called a dame, misunderstood the other poster's intent. Perhaps he/she is too young too know that the word "dame" in the 40's and 50's was not necessarily a degrading term. If a woman was a real dame - she would be a 'hottie" or a 'dime" today. She had it together, and didn't take no mess. Then too, there is "Dame" as is "Grand Dame" - a title of respect and influence. Bogey and Co used "dame" - later on James Dean and Co used "chicks" - all of it the language of the times. My wonderful wife is my "Boo".Every generation has it's own lexicon. Ms. Bacall is by all accounts a "Grand Dame", and I wish her many more years among us.

Smoking is stupid and makes a woman stink. You should have given it up 61 years ago sweetheart. You still look great. But you should quit.

Ms.Bacall aside - I get so tired of these oh-so-righteous, clean-living, "Spokespersons for God" who don't smoke, don't drink, don't lie, don't cheat, don't envy - jabbering about the evil weed - tobacco. You don't own the rights to the atmosphere, or the air in it - if you want to bitch and moan about something that makes you so sick - then how about those fumes you're sucking from the cars and trucks and busses in front of you everyday? Or the toxic, noxious, chemicals in the food chain? How about that factory smokestack that's spewing God -knows- what into your lungs as you grind on that j.o.b from 9-5 , 6-7 days a week? I'm more concerned about the crap I can't see, than some dude's cigarette smoke in my "space". And like someone else wisely said - you whiners don't really want cigs to go away - nor does the gov't. Way too much revenue - way too much tax would be gone. You willing to pay the difference? Didn't think so. Get a mask, and STHU !!!
