Most 91-year-olds are quietly biding their time at a peaceful retirement home. Not Californian Jerrie Thill, who spends her days beating the drums and recording new offbeat tracks -- all while lugging around an oxygen tank. Why We Love Her: Jerrie proves that age ain't nothin' but a number -- and that you can rock out whether your 9 or 90.
The native Iowan got her start when she was barely out of high school, becoming the vaudeville leader of an all-girl swing band in Chicago. She then spent several years singing and drumming for a series of jazz ensembles. And then in the early '70s, she joined the Dixie Belles, with whom she played for 20 years. She and the Belles appeared on "Married With Children" and "The Golden Girls."
These days you can find her at her monthly gig at the restaurant El Cid in L.A.'s Silverlake neighborhood. In her new collaboration with oddball singer Allee Willis, Jerrie says that she "chose drums over a diamond ring," and we think she made the right choice. While diamonds might be a girl's best friend, drums are way cooler.
Quote: "You have to stay in life's stream," Jerrie told the Studio City Sun in a 2005 interview. "Because the minute you sit down, you've had it."
Check out a video of Jerrie's new song with Allee after the jump.

My Grandmother played piano in a jazz trio until she was 93 and her health went down. She played her whole life, as I am in the process of doing now. I'm sure there are more women like this, but we rarely hear about them.

I'm so proud of Jerrie. As a drummer myself dealing with a few age issues 35 years her junior I am inspired at her vigor, dedication and energy. It shows in her clear eyes that she is alive and very well and I do think playing drums and having something positive and fun to look forward to each day has a lot to do with it. I hope to live to age 91 or older and still able to play my drums. You Go Girl!

I love to hear stories like this. My father who just turned 94 is a drummer and still performing as . He worked for Bob Wills and the Texas Playboys in the 1940s and was dubbed the Texas Drummer Boy because of the drum solo he wrote and Bob Wills included it on one of his albums which was unusual back then for drummers to be featured. To this day he is still traveling mostly to Texas to perform for the may fans that he has.

It's funny that this story came out. I'm a female drummer in a very successful (thankfully) band & our female sax player & I were just commenting that we wonder if we'll be doing this when we're 90 yrs old. Thx to this adorable inspirational woman, we now know the answer haha! Hey Jerri, if your reading this, much love from a sista female drummer :)

I saw Ella Fitzgerald when she was in her 90's in the Radio City Music Hall and she was great. If you can still do it in your 90's more power to you.

Rock on Grandma! This is what keeps her young and full of life. I have relatives that are no where near her age and they are so depressing and don't move! They make excuses for everything not stay active. She is truly an inspiration and teaches us that life only ends when you are six feet under.
