A few New York City commuter got an eyeful last Friday, sharing their subway ride with a rally of nursing mothers and one dedicated politician. A group of so-called "lactivists" rode the city's A train from uptown to Brooklyn last Friday, many of them nursing. Each year, the Breastfeeding Promotion Leadership Committee takes to the rails with their annual "caravan" -- a mass feeding designed to support the rights of women who breast-feed their children.
The BPLC also raises awareness of a breast-feeding "bill of rights" they're pushing to become law. That bill, spearheaded by rally attendee New York Senator Liz Krueger, aims to better educate women about breast-feeding.
Although breast-feeding in public is technically legal, the practice can still draw flak from law enforcement in NYC -- one woman caught a desk summons for breast-feeding on the train in 2004 and another got a "parking" ticket last week for pulling over to nurse.
Advocates want to make the practice more common because legal or not, when a kid's gotta eat, a kid's gotta eat. "Especially in New York, people are on the go all the time, but when a baby's hungry, well, you have to feed the baby," said participating mother Mara Bragg.
And really, considering the fact that most people on public transportation are so engrossed in reading, playing with their cell phones or creepily nodding off, why should anybody have a problem with a mother improving their commute by making a baby stop crying?

I agree. My wife breastfed all of our 5 children and she would do it in public if need be. She always covered herself and the baby's face with a diaper. There was never a problem.

please dont slam me for over population but i`ve breast fed seven children i however have always tried to be as discreet as possible when forced to do so in public its something that was never high on my preference list but sometimes babies are less than cooperative in that respect regardless how uncomfortable i was a baby needs to eat when it needs to eat

Do you cover up when you eat? Do you complain when a women shows some clevege? If a baby is nursing the only thing that should be showing is clevege part of a breast, if done right. If you don't like it don't look. Unless you just can't help yourself, in that case stare away.

Anna,
Why are you so ashamed of your body? Breast feeding is a natural process. There is no shame in what a mother does for her baby! It is people like you who give mothers a bad name. If it disgusts you so much, then leave the premises instead of making life difficult for mothers. Mothers should be allowed to show their breasts when they feed their babies. There is nothing sexual when it comes to breast feeding. It is Victorian thinking that causes most of this problem. You have that kind of thinking.

If I'm not mistaken... I do believe that an average bikini shows more boob than a breastfeeding mom; and no one seems to have a problem with that.
The girls that won't breastfeed in public are uncomfortable doing it or w/e, which is fine, but I don't think you should start going "No one else should do it either because I don't do that and I think I'm little-miss-perfect".
And the guys don't like it because the boobs aren't for them (jealous, lol) and they claim it "makes them sick". Which is funny, because alot of guys will suck on a nipple themselves (pervs). Apparently boobs are only appropriate to guys if they're for a sexual reason, which isn't their main purpose anyway.

Anna, do you have that same reaction when you look at yourself in the mirror naked? If you think a breast is that disturbing you have serious issues. PS.. why you looking anyway?

Get over yourself...unfortunately you must not have breast fed your own children...If you even have any. Once upon a time there wasn't anything else to feed your baby!! And it is a fact that breast fed babies tend to be less overweight than formula babies. (Don't b mad if u r fat)

Cows have teets...women have breasts. Your ignorance & lack of acceptance is far more disgusting than a mother nursing her child! If you don't like it, don't look!

These mothers are disgusting. Most of them care less or not about covering up while breastfeeding. I breastfed but I was most modest and showed respect.

yeah you sound like a formula feeder...do you cover up your face when you go to a restaurant? sometimes i do not have something to cover up with, so i use my hand...does that mean you would like our babies to starve??? i am giving my child the best, and so are all breast-feeding mothers of the world. you should be ashamed of yourself. why don't you think of the innocent babies' needs?

I'm embarrassed that you are a fellow woman. It's only in such a prude country like America that people would think that breastfeeding an infant in public is wrong. Why do we have to hide the babies head? Do you want a cover on your head when you're eating? Geez people!!! Get a grip!!!

Wow! After all these years, Americans still don't get it. Sting bikinis, bra-less women in tube and tank tops, showing cleavage almost to the nipple are all meant to draw attention (look at me), but a women breast feeding is a natural
and wonderful bonding with her child. Look away, give her a break. I'll bet there are other women sitting near her with sexy outfits and breast exposed with no baby attached. Clear your mind. Breast feeding is not sexy.

I don't think you found it disgusting when you were suckin' your mom's teet (I think we humans call it a BREAST!!) What are you, some kinda pig farmer??
Teet this! Breasts are natural. Why don't you just turn your head instead of gawking??
Jeez, get a life. Hopefully one that doesn't include a baby! Who knows, ya might run ouf of formula have to latch your little sucker on to your breast.
God forbid you haven't got a bib to COVER UP!! I guess you'd starve the baby instead of exposing your TEET!! Try covering up your mouth until you can speak in a more human way.

i think this debate will go on forever, however u feel about it i wont stopme from giving my baby the best, i breast fed the youngest of my two children and he had significantly less ear infections and colds than my first child, not to mention when he suffered a horrific accident and was brain damaged as a result and then he baffled doctors when he recovered almost completely, now of course im not saying breast feeding will create miracles but in my heart i feel that the extra love and attention i gave my son the 11 months before his accident played an big role in how strong he was ( many studies have proven breastmilk has positive effects on the brain). I thank god everyday for the gifts he has giving me including the ability to form a incredible bond with my children...breastmilk also gives ur children anitbodies to many illnesses..and for those of you willing to give ur life for ur child and claim to want the best well why cany u give a little of your so called "dignity" to give them a healthier life

I am going to tell you what everyone tells women when they don't like the porn that is being shoved down our throats "if you don't like it....don't look at it. Just shut up, its a free country"
