If finding respite from the criticism of her detractors was Sarah Palin's goal when she resigned as governor of Alaska on July 26, she failed miserably. At Salon.com this week, Juan Cole wrote an entire column comparing Palin to Iran's Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. Not only are Palin's political ideology and aspirations still being scrutinized, but her personal life is as well. (The rumor of an impending Palin divorce, although it has been officially denied, remains a hot topic of discussion.)
Regardless of whether or not she ultimately decides to run for the office, as long as Palin is polling well against other Republicans she will be treated as a presidential hopeful. I understand that. What is not so easy to understand is the intense hatred for Palin and the nature of some of the criticism aimed at her -- especially that coming from self-described feminists.
A Narrow Feminism
The dictionary definition of the word "feminism" as a "doctrine advocating social, political, and all other rights of women equal to those of men," has not always matched the widespread understanding of the word by the general public.
Over the past few decades, feminism has come to be associated with a more narrow liberal agenda with groups like the National Organization for Women claiming to speak on behalf of women in America. Issues such as abortion rights and ending sex discrimination in the workplace have been at the forefront of the movement.
Click here for more on Palin and the feminist agenda after the jump.
And that's certainly true of the feminist party line on Palin. Rather than celebrating the nomination of Palin as the first woman GOP vice-presidential candidate, self-described feminists have been some of her harshest critics -- most likely because she did not fit their stereotype of what a feminist is. Some even argued it was impossible to be a social conservative and a feminist.
Much of the early criticism of Palin focused on her decision to work while being a mom with five children. Oddly, now that she has resigned as governor she is being criticized by some of the same people for quitting her job.
The Pro-Life Problem
Many of the so-called feminists who attack Palin cite her pro-life position. They claim to be speaking for the majority of American women. But in May, Gallup found for the first time in nine years of their values survey that more women identified themselves as pro-life than pro-choice.
Antiquated notions of feminism deny the reality, and diversity, of women today. Believe it or not, there are conservative women who find it possible (thanks in part to technology and greater workplace flexibility) to have successful careers and families.
Today's women, both liberal and conservative, choose to hold their own opinions on issues, and to elect people who share those opinions. They want fair treatment of those women running for public office, even when those candidates -- like Palin -- don't adhere to a liberal agenda. That's a concept any feminist should grasp.

I think the article needs to not generalize feminists into one broad category. Though the general stereotype of the feminist is considered the "radical" feminist, there are many other types, further away from the left side of the spectrum. I for one, support Sarah Palin. As a feminist (yes, men can be feminists) she stands for everything that women's rights are all about....equality. She is the GOVERNOR of Alaska....a usually testosterone-dominated arena. She is a mother. She is standing on equal ground with men around her. Many criticize her for being stupid...but it's funny that her state is one of the few not in the red. Finally, I support a women's right to choose! Women have a right to do whatever the heck they want with their bodies....but the baby inside deserves his/her rights as well. Pro-Choice is Pro-Genocide.

Sarah Palin is a conservative, female politician who has conservative views. No surprise. You can disagree with her - fine; argue with her views - fine. But instead, Democrats have decided to use her to define themselves as the new party of HATE. Congratulations.

I must beg to differ with all of you who is supposed to be in on the know. I am not a Sarah Palin fan but I do take exception to the name calling. Where in the world is your sense of humanity. No, Sarah Palin doesn't deserve to act for the entire country when she couldn't speak forcefully for her little/big state. Insofar as President Obama is concerned why not give the man a chance. You gave Ex President Bush eight years and he had already bankrupted the country and I don't mean mone-wise. I mean in the diplomatic and respect department. He depended upon A God that I doubt very much that he knows and when he looked into Mr. Putin's eyes, what did he see? If he saw something prophetic why didn't he share it with us? Instead of us tearing ourselves apart we'd better begin building ourselves into the country of country we've always professed to be.

I remember when the feminists said that women should be able to have it all. 25 years later, a woman comes along who is educated, successful, fearless, stands on her principles, says what she means and means what she says, has a family, a supportive husband and has reached great heights in her professional life. And what do the feminists do? They trash her!!!!! So many times over the years I have seen women be non-supportive to their successful counterparts. Is it jealously, envy or what?
I guess today, feminists have lost their way, or just don't get it. Sarah Palin is a woman who is everything the feminists said they were striving for during the feminist movement. No wonder the movement lost momentum- they don't even know when they have a true product of the "Women should be able to have it all" era.

Cara, please do list Barack's qualifications! The way I see it he was elected to the Illinois State Senate, then to the U S Senate. Along the way he hampered the state of Illinois an then the United States by being 'absent' on important votes? BTW a Governor has more experience in leadership than a mere Senator. So I defy you to tout Barack's qualifications right here and right NOW. Otherwise take your ill-informed LIES elsewhere :) BTW, God Bless you my child, you are forgiven! Leave and sin no more!!!

As far as I'm concerned, the feminists are the worst hypocrits of the liberal sect. They don't like Sarah because she has 5 (or so) kids instead of 5 (or so) abortions and she has christian values. She doesn't line up with their ideal of what women are supposed to be, little Pelosi wannabes. They are the losers....not Sarah.

I am a Christian Democrat (yes, we exist) and I don't support Sarah Palin for many reasons, the most prominent of which is that she cannot speak intelligently. Why anyone of any gender or political viewpoint would rally around that type of potential candidate is beyond me.

Well, if it makes you feel better, obama can speak intelligently. ONLY when he's reading what someone else wrote.
When he's on his own, he basically speaks like a child with down syndrome.

"I felt ashamed when Palin made her little 'glass ceiling' speech, because I know that Palin didn't EARN her position as VP. If she was a man, there's no way she would have been chosen."
Oh, really? I have 3 words for you:
Senator Joe Biden!

I still think the liberals are saddened and critical of Sarah because they didn't find her first! Therefore, they will put her down, step on her, grind her into the ground so deep they pretend she doesn't exist. But I see her being like the Phoenix Bird....she will recover beautifully and go on with some great political sense for this nation. The question is....will the libs ever see the light with common sense or will they continue to bury their heads in the sand and let the good ole USA go down the tubes with them?

Ignorant people make me sick. It is not only Democrats who have abortions. Plenty of Republicans and their kids have abortions. Some more than once. Heck my good Repbulican friend made her daughter have an abortion and was pro-life until her daughter got pregnant. It was all very sad. I'm a Democrat and I believe in fiscal responsibility. I believe in pro-choice (never had an abortion but I don't believe the religious right which also doesn't believe in birth control and abortion should rule womens decision to choose. If women are committing murder then God can deal with them. Most of this countries extremists are Republicans. Do you think the skinheads are Democrats? Not they are far right extremists. Shouting down others at a public gathering to discuss health care and insurance is un-American. The Brown shirts in Germany did a good job of harrassing and intimidating people. Nice job Republicans. What country do you want to live in? You are such lemmings - your party and the countries rich lobbyists get you to go out and argue against a change in direction in this country that might just save lives and you willingly do it. Fools. If the old folks keep arguing that they don't like socialized medicine I might just drop my support for medicare coverage. What is wrong with you people are you so dumb you don't even know that Medicare is a government run program that no-one complains about? Is it a Christian way that it is okay that 45M in this country don't have access to health care? WWJD? I have lifetime health care. It will never be a problem for me. Except the cost of it keeps going up because more and more and more people don't have health care and their inabiltiy to pay is passed on to me and all others who actually pay for our health care. The doctors, hospitals and testing facilities aren't eating those costs - they are being passed on to you and I. FIGURE IT OUT!!!! Don't be a freaking lemming and read the facts - not FOX, O'Reilley, Hannity, Rush or Glenn. Real facts.

You know, to anyone who really knows what is going on, and that change for the worse is not really a good thing, your post just says blah blah blah blah....You can't even get the fact on the number of people w/o health insurance.. 45M? LOL

Great article! I love Sarah Palin because she is a good person and a better woman. I will vote for her as President. I think she would be the so-called "change" the Dems are talking about. Only it would be real change. Not the puppet who is biting off 100 issues at a time in unorthodox ways. No one can find fault with her experience in government, because she has much more than this president did. Keep fighting Ms. Palin!

I do not consider myself a feminist and never have. But, I used to be pro
choice. I was a moderate Democrat and voted for McCain/Palin. When Palin
came on stage for the first time with McCain she energized me. I like her
and feel these "feminist" and the media have been down right hateful not
only to her but her family as well. I think her presence was a shock to their
egos, they just plain didn't like her, weren't going to give her a chance or
seek out the good in her, no sir they hated her bam, they slammed her and
her children. If any of you posting want to slam my comment go ahead,
you probably think your better or know more than I do.

The Argument Of Pro-Choice Versus Right To Life Misses The Point...Being That Women SHOULD Be Empowered To Determine What Is The Best Course Of Action For Their Babies.Their Families AND Themselves.....Without Prejudice...And In That Regard...Palin Most Certainly Failes To Make The Case For Branding Herself A Feminist....Feminism And Orthodox Religiousw Theology...Be it Christian..Hebrew or Muslim...Are Diametricly Opposed To Each Other

Bigotry and sexism is alive and well in America. This is not a feminist or a liberal/conservative issue. Women candidates for the office of president or vice president are trivialized and attention is paid to issues that are irrelevent just because they are women. This reminds me of Hillary Clinton -- a woman candidate from another political spectrum. Much attention was paid to Hillary's pants suits and other irrelevant issues. Male candidates were not judged in the same manner.
This country does not give any woman presidential candidate any respect.
This country is not ready for a woman president.
