Q: I bought this pair of black Capri pants last summer for a family reunion and haven't worn them since. I generally dress pretty conservatively but these feel a little too stuffy -- even for me. Can you help me find a way to make these pants seem cool?

A: It's true: Unless you're over 50, cropped pants can seem like the ultimate nerd of Fashion High. But since you mentioned you dress conservatively anyways, I think there's a way to make this pair work. Instead of trying to force Miss Capri into being something she isn't (i.e. cool), I'd go for a classic Hamptons/Nantucket vibe by pairing her with a fab tunic and some strong accessories.

An embellished tunic like this one by Tory Burch is something every woman should have in her closet for summer. Since your Capris are calf-length, a thigh-grazing top will work to balance their longer hem.

Carry an oversize tote that features edgy detailing to add another dimension to your look. I like this one by Bebe because it has lots of hardware and a cinched drawstring.

Flats are always your best bet when sporting cropped pants. This mock-croc pair by Roxy is a great option because it will add some color and texture to your mostly black-and-white outfit.

Finish with some aviator sunglasses like this pair by Michael by Michael Kors. These flattering frames look great on most face shapes.
