Q: A few years ago, I bought a pair of harem pants and wore them to death for several months. They've been collecting dust ever since, but I hear they're making a comeback. How can I give my 2003 pants a 2009 spin?

-- Diana, 27, Queens, N.Y.

A: You're right -- harem pants are back in a big way this season and have been seen on the runways of fashion heavyweights from Alexander McQueen to Hannah MacGibbon for Chloe. I bet when you wore them back in '03, you gave them a funky urban spin, right? This season the look has more of a hip, downtown vibe. They key to achieving this is to balance the slouchy nature of the pants with a fitted top and structured accessories.

On top, wear a body-hugging tank to offer some contrast against the volume of your pants. I like pieces that feature some sort of detailing -- like this tank by Ann Demeulemeester -- though a plain or ribbed one would work, too.

Platforms are a strong style for spring and summer and will help to elongate your legs so the pants don't overwhelm your petite frame. I like the unexpected combo of the brown leather upper with the green platform in this pair by BCBG Girls.

An oversize angular tote like this one by Hype prevents the outfit from looking too slouchy -- a danger when wearing relaxed trousers like yours.

Finish your look with a cuff or bangle. Since you'll be wearing a tank, you'll have plenty of arm space to show off a fun piece like this one from Marc by Marc Jacobs.
