Kids today are entertained by talking toys, floating houses and adorable robots. What did we get when we were kids? DEATH, that's what. Sure, "Up"'s widower backstory is a bummer, but it's nothing like the animal brutality of some classic flicks. You could bet if there was an animal involved in a movie, it was going to end up pumped full of lead. "All Dogs Go to Heaven" wasn't just a movie -- it was a rule. If "Air Bud" had come out in 1986, he would be slam-dunking the dirt instead of playing soccer in a straight-to-video sequel.
Click below to see -- for our money -- the most emotionally scarring animal movie deaths in recent memory (warning: spoilers) and be sure to comment on any traumas we forgot. And if you're feeling really bummed out by these sad animal deaths, check our easy ways to get happy in a flash.

You guys are ridiculous with your comments condemning parents for keeping kids in a "bubble". This article wasn't about providing kids with realism in their lives, nor was it showing the lack of "real life" in childrens' movies. It was simply an article about movies that featured sad animal death scenes that we watched as kids! Get over yourself people.
Loved the article. But where exactly were Old Yeller or All Dogs Go To Heaven on the list!

Yes, I can see that it says emotionally scarring deaths, blah blah, but I really think there's just too much being read into it. I never saw it as anything but a list of movies from when we were kids that had sad animal deaths in it. The End.

You could bet if there was an animal involved in a movie, it was going to end up pumped full of lead......read the article before you get into a debate. I suppose you just get a high off people realizing you exist infront of a monitor. Ever step away from the computer or are you that important in this word you have to comment every other time?? You are no one, get off your horse and go be constructive and masturbate and get a vasectomy so we can rid the world of dumbasses like you.

Kids need to know about death. Kids need to know how it happens, why it happens, and how it affects people, including themselves. I work in a daycare, I make sure that I dont use other words for death such as passed away or "sleeping" or any of that other bull. I also make sure to read them books about death such as saying good bye to lulu which is about a little girl who has an old dog that dies. Kids need to know what's real.

I sure hope you are getting permission from the parents before you take it upon yourself to expose children to this very sensitive subject. I would be enraged if someone made the decision to “educate” my child on something as personal as death.

Why shouldn't kids see these movies? I never had any problem with them when i was a kid. yeah it was sad that the animals died, but that just taught me that we don't live forever.
just like the other commentators said kids today are pampered too much!! All these shows now a days are cartoons which have things that would NEVER happen in real life.

Children need to be shown real life and all of its good sides and the stuff that is not so great. They live in pretty little bubbles where they are completely protected by parents and our culture. These shows give them some prep for real life. Like the death of a parent or a beloved dog .... it shows how they can get on with life after a horrible event. DON"T dumb down the kids !!!

Death is a fact of life, so they better learn while they are young, because it's not going to get any better.

Julieanne, you are profane with the name of God. He is holy, and he doesn't appreciate how you use his name. Read the Bible, or ask him yourself, and you will find out.

Poor Jim - there is no god. Get over it. If there were a god, then little babies wouldn't suffer. If I were all powerful, I wouldn't let a kid die of cancer. Sorry, Again, there is NO god.

These movies help kids be better people. These films help kids cope with life and death situations. These are movies that should be an example to hollywood on the movies they still should be making. Things do not always end happy. We should hold these on a pedastal as great children's movies not condem them for it.

I would much rather my children (11 and 8 years old) see Old Yeller and Bambi than some of the other movies out there. I think parents need to know their children. There are some things my 11 could watch at a younger age that there is no way I would allow my younger child to watch at the same age. I also think some parents need to get a babysitter now and then. Taking your 3 year old to a PG13 or R rated movie because "it goes over their head" is not good for your child. Just my 2 cents.

Please.
Maybe we shold put them in a glass box. What is wrong with people. little league or soccer games there is no looser. If a kid makes an out we still let him run the bases. Everyone gets a trophy even those that finish in last place. When they play tag they have to tag the shadow not the person. They can't throw the ball at someone in dodge ball. I can't think of all of them but that should make my point. This is all from people that think it is OK to suck the brain out of a baby at the 8 or 9 month point. This world is so screwed up.

Well Said! Our kids are being raised like a bunch of wussies! You loose, no trophy for you, try again next year kid! Those movies are classics and teach kids about life. If they cant take it maybe they should join a convent or the priesthood.

Everyone should see these movies! It is a lesson in life that NO ONE or anything lives forever and that death is a part of life, even though it is sad and crying will result. Losing and animal, a beloved pet will prepare you for all the pain that ensues in your life. Stop sheltering and coddleing these kids.
And stop running off to the Emergency Room every time your kid has a cold!!! Learn to be a parent and deal with life.

Bambi, Old Yeller, Lassie Come Home - all those films taught me how to handle sorrow, how to love, how to care about all creatures. Todays kid stuff teaches violence. Our news screams death and destruction as do movies and games. And our young people today have become cold to death. I say give us more Bambi and less - MUCH LESS - violence!
