I also grew up to this cartoon and it did upset me but it was because I lost my mother when I was a kid so it hit a little to close to home.

Littlefoot's mother's death was a true tragedy but considering the time in which the story is set, it was a daily event in the Dinosaur's lives. His Mother's death didn't stop Littlefoot from searching for the Great Valley or abandon life, curl up and die himself. It made him more determined to find the Valley and he also made some great and very different friends. The main story does not revolve around his Mother's death but his search for the Great Valley and he helped Ducky, Spike, Pettry, and even Cera find a new home. They might also have died trying to find the valley on their own but together they were able to overcome some really amazing obstacles and eventually, found happiness and new lives in the Great Valley.

the land before time is one of my favourite movies of all time. and yes, i bawled my heart out when little foot's mother died, even now at 19.
