What happened when they were writing this script!?! "Say, let's put in a pony, for the kids, and then drown it in a SWAMP OF SADNESS. Sound good? Great."

Death is something that we are all going to do. If we really want to prepare our children for it's reality, let us not be a death denying society.

I agree. I also think that people have way to much time on there hands now a days. This is rediculous. I grew up on alot of these movies and I was excited to have my kids watch them with me. There is nothing wrong with death, it is something that we all have to deal with these days and should be some what prepared for it. Thats another problem now is that people seem to think that they should keep kids in a plastic bubble until there 21 and let them go and then wonder why they can't cope with the world.....

i think there's a place in some children's movies for death, but when the beloved main character is killed off repeatedly it could create a sense of expectation that the affection you feel, for those animals, will be short lived and cause our kids to desensitize themselves to feelings of emotion.

Though sad, death is indeed a part of life. We must learn to deal with it. It is part of our maturing.

Unfortunately, Death is an ever present reality, and I remember watching most of these as a kid, and crying as they happened, but really, it's part of life. Life isn't always happy and upbeat - and we learn that while going through life as well as while we're hearing stories - why do you think the old stories were so morbid and depressing? Because they were dealing with actual life.
Emotionally scarring is a term I would describe none of these movies with.

I agree. Many of these are great films. The suggestion that children are harmed by them is absolute nonsense.

What?! No "Captains Courageous" (1937)?
Freddie's spoiled rich kid sobs; Spence's Manuel feeds the l'il fishes.
Not a dry eye in the house.

I liked this movie as a child, and I liked most of the others on the list as well. Children need to know the world is not perfect. If they have to find out at the age of 25 it's going to cause them lots more problems and stress.

Death is a part of life. For many of us some movies like these are the only time we see this part of life until much later in life. I'm glad that they are here cause then when death does come, wether it be pet or person we know that it happens and can deal with it a little better. Can you emagine being a kid that only sees all the pretty and nice parts of the world and god forbid you loose a parent or someone, you'd probably think that your the only one out there going through this. I let my daughter watch movies like these (making sure that they are not scary to leave nightmares) and then we talk about how sertain parts make us feel and we are very open about our emotions and life events. I think overall it makes her a much more understanding and sensative person.

I agree Bill. I was not scarred by any of these movies nor were my children. We have to learn these things. I

Children have to learn about loss one way or the other. Movies like these and other stories help children prepare for real life. As a child i saw almost everyone of these of movies, they made me laugh, cry and think. You never know when real life tragedy will happen and if children are not exposed though movies and stories of this type the shock of something bad would devistate them. I lost my mother when I was fifteen and I was more prepared than if I would have never been exposed to before. If we keep trying to shelter children from saddness and the unpretty REAL LIFE will kill them.

again Grasshopper, kids see death soon enough. Let them live/be happy until then. A jadeed child is not easily unjaded.

Death is a part of life unless it involves your own child. If anything ever happened to my daughter i would take my own life, i don't think i'd be strong enough to live with that much hurt. and have alot of respect for the people that can deal with it.

I agree! I saw most of these movies as a child and I am perfectly fine. Those parts are sad, but gotten over very quickly. I remember watching these movies over and over again. I have a 3 month old daughter and I will allow her to watch these movies because I see nothing wrong with exposing her to tragedy in a way thats much easier to deal with than the ones we deal with in real life. Why make her go through something extremely tragic without being eased into the fact that bad things do happen. These movies show that life goes on after death, and I think kids should know this. If you shelter them they will be in for a rude awakening later in life!
