10. Lucille Bluth, "Arrested Development" Completely dependent on the family's wealth, Lucille could not exist without the material comforts her husband (illegally) provides.
9. Ginger Grant, "Gilligan's Island" Everyone else was concerned about getting off the damn island. Ginger was concerned about doing her hair.
8. June Cleaver, "Leave It to Beaver" Wonder if she's really satisfied that her life revolves around keeping her kitchen spotless for hubby?

7. Heidi Montag, "The Hills" It's technically reality, but we all know it's scripted. And choosing a tool like Spencer Pratt over a female friendship is a serious enough offense to bend the rules. And the whole 'Speidi' thing? Barf.
6. C.J. Parker, "Baywatch" We know she saves lives and stuff, but the whole running around in a skimpy suit thing really only objectifies women.
5. Diane Chambers, "Cheers" She relies on bartender Sam to keep her from going batsh*t crazy. Her attempt at independence? Sleeping her way through Europe.

4. Meredith Grey, "Grey's Anatomy" The majority of her residency is spent mooning over McDreamy. At one point the wishy-washy doc even begs him to choose her. C'mon, Mer.
3. Laurie, "That 70s Show" Her character is merely arm candy for a slew of different men, her family even jokes that she probably has a few bastard children. Heh, heh ... eh.
2. Gabrielle, "Desperate Housewives" Uh, doesn't the name of the show sort of say it all? Gabrielle's a desperate, money-hungry trophy wife.

1. The Wives, "Big Love" This one could be argued, but for us polygamy is pretty hard to reconcile with feminism. Not to mention all the squabbling and infighting that goes on between Margene, Barb and Nicki.
Agree? Disagree? Who'd we miss out on?

Lucille doesn't turn out to be the Leech Wife in the end, just watch the season finale of AD.

I thought the same thing when I read that! Lucille is actually the secret mastermind behind everything. Although she still needs the money to survive!

Rachel *started* the show as a spoiled daddy's girl. By the end of the show she'd ended up as a buyer for Ralph Lauren - not through daddy's connections, but her own work and dedication (and a little luck, but anyone would need that to jump from waitress to corporate buyer...). She was a complete modern day success story for women. Also, her relationship with Ross never detracted from her own independence.

In fact when he became controlling, she called for a break. And she's a powerful single mom (even if in the end she chose Ross over a job in Europe).

Miranda starts out as a single-minded male-hating career women who becomes a single mother and a partner in her law firm. Yes, she marries at the end.
Samantha knows she doesn't need a man and thinks their only good for one thing-one night stands. She becomes the head of a PR firm. She does settle down, but she feels she has lost her independance and leaves him (after making him rich and famous).
Carrie starts out as a columnist (must have paid pretty well considering all those shoes) and then becomes the author of a best-selling book. Yes, she has an affair and yes she does marry at the end.
Ideally Charlotte is the only one that would really fit the bill.
How about Camoran from House?
And if we're going down the cartoon character road, we can add almost every female from every Disney movie excluding Mulan, Pocahontas, and Jasmine. Lets see Cinderella, Snow White, Aurora (Sleeping Beauty), Belle, Giselle...anyone want to finish?

Miranda is an amazingly independent woman; she doesn't need a man to define her. The same goes for Samantha. I however completely agree with you about Charlotte and Carrie. Charlotte is so dependent on the men in her life and her dream is to become a house wife.
I don't think that it is fair for you to clump all these women together because they are all very different.

AMEN! I tuned into SITC to see four independent women livng the good life in NYC; what I saw was three whiny women and a slut who CONSTANTLY talk about men!
At least Samantha took what she wanted from men (I used the term "slut" in the best possible way!) instead of constantly worrying about when she would get married. The character closest to an independent ended up a single mother!
Useless show, and hardly feminist!

What about Farrah Fawcett in Charlie's Angels? Catherine Bach as Daisy Duke from Dukes of Hazzard? Edith Bunker from All in the Family?

Even though Archie called Edith a "Dingbat" she was much tougher inside than her exterior portrayed. Several times when pushed too far she chewed Archie up and spit him out, leaving him speechless, cowering and apologetic.
She was much more emotionally and socially tolerant than Archie and though she seemed scattered and dingy, she was anything but. She was a wise woman, she knew when and how to pick her battles with socially and emotionally intolerant Archie Bunker, a husband who she loved, but understood his deep fear of progress and change.

Feminism was invented as to allow unattractive women access to the mainstream of the American culture. What are your thoughts about Hillary Clinton who turned a blind eye to her husband's numerous affairs so she could ride his coat tails to a political office...except when she was home baking cookies, right? You're an idiot, and I bet extremely unattractive!

'Pick me, choose me, Love ME!'-Meredith Grey, Grey's Anatomy.
Seriously? Other than the begining, where she had a one night stand with a random man, this was seriously what turned me off this show. Seriously.

Her (Rachel) relationship DID detract from her independence! She stayed in NY. One of the Worst endings EVER! She wanted that kind of job from day one.

Donna Mills (forgot character name she played) Knots Landing
Dianne Carroll as Dominique Deveroe on Dynasty
Were all women who were just AS GOOD at being BAD as the boys. You can't get more feminist than that.
