There are perks to having a clean home. A clutter-free environment is naturally more relaxing, and you won't accidentally step on an old sandwich. But daily housework is not without its negative effects, specifically on your salary, according to a recent study.

The average unmarried woman spends 67 minutes per day doing housework, while married women spend an average of 97. 85 percent of the women who spent more than the average time doing housework made less money. In fact, for about every extra hour of work, their salaries decreased by 24 cents per hour.

The same is true to a much lesser extent for men, who -- for starters -- only spend 29 minutes a day doing housework. (Grrrrr.....) Doing more than the average amount of housework also had less effect on their salaries.

We guess it's reasonable that women who aren't spending late nights at the law office working on their briefs have more time to iron their delicates. But does this mean that an orthopedic surgeon and the guy who works 10 hours a week at Guitar Center are equally likely to have filthy apartments? Say it ain't so.
