Just when you thought puppies couldn't get any cuter, South Korean scientists had to go and make them glow in the dark. Actually, maybe that doesn't make them cuter, maybe it makes them terrifying monstrosities. Hard to say.

None of that really concerned the researchers, who were more interested in the process than the result. Figuring out the best way to successfully manipulate the animals' genes may prove useful in researching and fighting diseases. The red fluorescent protein is basically just an indicator that the technique is working, like that stuff you chew at the dentist, but with DNA instead of plaque. The four beagle puppies are all named Ruppy (Ruby + Puppy, get it?), since all four of them glow red under infrared light.

Some researchers think the puppies are a major breakthrough. We think they'd make an amazing night light and would love to keep a couple around for black-light parties.
