Think you have a lot of self-control when it comes to food? Well, you probably don't look at a whole lot of lettuce. According to new research, just seeing a salad on a menu is enough to make the most disciplined dieter order French fries. It's called "vicarious goal fulfillment" and it means that thinking about ordering the salad will make you feel like you already did ... Which causes you to reward yourself with a bad choice. (Your brain's kind of like an unruly teenager that way.)
Apparently, all it takes to totally blow your diet is to walk into a place that offers one healthy option. Think the Low Cal menu at Chili's -- who orders off of that? When directly offered such "alternatives," most dieters tended to go straight for the unhealthiest item available.
Well, screw it. If seeing a salad makes you make really unhealthy decisions, we're, um ... going to Arby's.
