According to a study out today, sexual harassment from males can prevent females from bonding with each other, a conclusion reached by studying guppies, which is apparently a fish community with high levels of sexual harassment from males toward females. Yes, you read that correctly. Fish apparently can sexually harass other fish. In fact, according to researcher Dr. Safi Darden, "Sexual harassment is a burden that females of many species ranging from insects to primates suffer ..."
Great, so apparently it sucks to be a woman no matter what species you are. We're having trouble imagining what fish harassment actually looks like, but the picture at left was captioned "Two male guppies harass a female," so apparently the male fish just kind of swim menacingly behind the female in pairs?

I have a tank full of guppies (courtesy of my boyfriend) and you would not believe how much the males bother the females. The ladies can't do anything without a dozen or so males hovering near them, occasionally biting at them, or blocking their little swim path. I actually feel bad for them.
