My favorite toy of the '90s -- like a lot of us who grew up listening to Ace of Base and watching Donna Martin -- is easily Pogs. The low-budget collectibles were little more than cardboard coins with a decal slapped on -- yet they were the stuff of small fortunes. The faux currency encouraged kids to barter and negotiate like mini-magnates during recess, where they played the "Pog game" -- a simple contest where kids stacked Pogs and threw a "slammer" disc at the pile. Points were awarded for each Pog that was flipped over. In more aggressive versions, the winner was awarded the loser's disks.

The Pog craze began in the 1920s when Hawaii's Haleakala Dairy began topping its POG fruit juice (passion fruit, orange and guava) bottles with a round cardboard cap, and collecting and playing with the caps became popular during the Depression.
The craze died off but was revived in the '90s by a Hawaiian schoolteacher who made a math game out of the original, reviving interest in collecting the caps. Advertisers and corporations capitalized on the craze, emblazoning Pogs with everything from Simpsons characters to the Mountain Dew logo. The rarer the Pog, the greater its street value.
Like any red-hot craze, the Pog frenzy eventually cooled, though a quick eBay or Facebook search reveals that there are still tons of Pog-obsessed collectors out there.

Lauren Bohn goes to NYU, enjoys reading while eating peanut butter directly from the jar and desperately wishes it were still socially acceptable to throw a slammer in the middle of a room.

OMG, Pogs were my world in seventh grade. All the kids used to compare and trade theirs. I still have a few around I think.
