The biggest event in college basketball is happening tonight -- between Michigan State and the University of North Carolina -- and we've got everything you need to enjoy the game tonight and impress your sports-obsessed friends.

NCAA Know-How

March Madness, aka the NCAA Tournament, starts every year in mid-March with 65 teams, all ranked as "seeds" based on how good they are (1 is the best, 16 the worst). After six single-elimination rounds (and an initial play-in game to take the field to an easily bracketed 64 teams), only two teams remain: Michigan State and North Carolina.

The last time these two teams played was in early December, and UNC won by a whopping 98-63 margin. They'll be facing off tonight in the same building in Detroit, but this time Michigan State should put up more of a fight. One of Michigan State's star players, Goran Suton, was out with a knee injury last time around, but he'll be raring to go tonight.

Get to Know the Teams – The North Carolina Tar Heels (The Boys in Blue)
Even before the Tar Heels played their first game of the season in November, everyone expected them to win the National Championship. Talk about pressure -- sports pundits predicted they might pull off a perfect season. But then injuries hurt the team, and they enter the season finale with 33 wins and four losses.

Carolina also has President Obama's endorsement -- he picked the Tar Heels to win it all.

Key Players: Ty Lawson, arguably the team's best player, is still in pain after hurting one of his big toes last month. Meanwhile, Tyler Hansbrough was last season's National Player of the Year. His physical play under the basket has helped him set a new record for number of free throws made.

Fun Fact: Tyler Hansbrough's contacts have been known to fall out when he's fighting for the ball.

The Michigan State Spartans (The Guys in Green)
Michigan State beat Louisville and UConn to make it to the final. And lucky for them, tonight's game is being played in Detroit, which means the Spartans essentially have home-court advantage. Almost 50,000 of the team's fans showed up the last time the Spartans played in Detroit!

Key Players: Goran Suton (a refugee who grew up near war-ravaged Sarajevo and only moved to the U.S. just before high school) is the best rebounder in the tournament so far. That means he gives his team the most opportunities to score points after baskets are attempted. Combine that with his 14.3 points per game and Kalin Lucas's 12.8 points per game, and it's no wonder Michigan State has gotten this far.

Fun Fact: Every player to stay with Spartans coach Tom Izzo for four years has played in at least one Final Four. Not bad, huh?

How the Game Is Played
College basketball is played in two 20-minute halves, and each team has five players on the court at any given time. The player who has the ball is on "offense." If he takes more than two steps without dribbling it, then he loses possession of the ball because he "traveled."

Most baskets are worth two points, but if a basket is made from outside the line that forms a semi-circle around the basket, it's worth three. Free-throws, which players get to shoot if another player touches them illegally -- or "fouls" them -- are worth one point each.

You can talk shop with the resident basketball buffs by making intelligent comments about a team's defense. If a player bats the ball away before a basket is made, say something like, "Nice block." If he attempts to do that but touches the other team's player, then it's a foul. Players can get kicked out of the game if they get five fouls.

If all else fails? Name drop. "I would be impressed if a girl I thought wasn't a sports fan knew the coaches' names," said Matt, a die-hard UNC fan. The Tar Heels' coach is Roy Williams (he's the one with glasses and gray hair), while Tom Izzo coaches Michigan State. Go get 'em, girl!
