You've heard the horror stories of Internet romance gone wrong, but we're obsessed with this crazy story of Internet love and murder in which Thomas Montgomery, 47, pretended to be a young Marine about to leave for Iraq, and a 40-something West Virginia woman used her daughter's photos (!) to pose as a pretty 18-year-old.

The whole thing got even weirder when the woman also started IMing with a co-worker of Montgomery's, who was later discovered dead 20 miles outside of Buffalo. Neither one knew the truth about the woman they communicated with. Montgomery is charged with his murder (motive: jealousy).

All of this raises the question: What kinds of nutbags are lurking behind seemingly innocuous screen names? Can you ever really know who you're talking to online?
