A new study from Northumbria University says that women are more likely to be attracted to men who have a good sense of humor, which apparently also has the power to make us dismiss physical imperfections like beer bellies, baldness and Tevas with socks. Perhaps because we can't see them too clearly through the tears of laughter streaming down our faces?Women associate a good sense of humor with being more intelligent, which in turn makes someone a better mate because they will be able to provide better for their offspring. And you just thought you liked to have a good time.
What do you think -- does being hilarious really make an ugly dude more attractive?
Beta Males
Ben Stone (Seth Rogen), "Knocked Up." A beautiful woman with an unbelievable job hops right into bed with an out-of-work Canadian stoner, under the cinematic pretext of "beer goggles." Please let us know what she was drinking so we can buy stock.
Universal
Lloyd Dobler (John Cusack), "Say Anything." Oh, Lloyd Dobler. Now that we know that kickboxing was not, indeed, the sport of the future, following gorgeous, smart Diane Court to college in England without a job or prospects of his own just seems kinda pathetic.
Everett Collection
Andy Stitzer (Steve Carell), "The 40-Year-Old Virgin." Steve Carell's hairy manchild had neither a driver's license nor a lick of sexual experience, but landed small-business owner and hot single mom Catherine Keener. You know, 'cause he was so nice.
Universal
Chuck (Adam Sandler), "I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry." A homophobic firefighter so broke that he agrees to marry his male co-worker for domestic-partner benefits lies to Jessica Biel about his sexual history. She falls madly in love with him. Who wouldn't?!
Universal
Troy (Ethan Hawke), "Reality Bites." Unemployed musician makes romantic pronouncements about smoking Camel Wides and bitches at Winona Ryder even as he crashes on her couch and hits her up for free pizza. The love story of our time.
ZUMA Press
Seth (Jonah Hill), "Superbad." Aside from a rather impressive collection of obscene drawings, this paunchy, raunchy dork seems to have little to offer the cute, funny girl he gets.
Sony
John Beckwith (Owen Wilson), "Wedding Crashers." A gorgeous, altruistic treasury secretary's daughter falls for a "professional mediator" who spends his spare time lying his way into parties and bridesmaids' underpants. Obvs.
Everett Collection
Ben Wrightman (Jimmy Fallon), "Fever Pitch." Boston baseball superfan and crap boyfriend constantly ditches his beautiful, successful girlfriend because the Red Sox "need" him. How adorable!
20th Century Fox
Dante (Brian O'Halloran), "Clerks" & "Clerks II." A chubby dude with a creepstache and a series of crap jobs that he loves to whine about. Catnip to women like Rosario Dawson.
Weinstein Co.
Michael (Zach Braff), "The Last Kiss." A mopey man-boy cheats on his lovely, pregnant girlfriend with a college student, and she takes him back. In the movies, he's "conflicted." In real life, we call that "sleazebaggy."

Yes, being funny can make a guy more attractive. Look at Patton Oswalt, also known as "The other fat dude from 'The King of Queens'". Really not that attractive, but because he's funny there is a small part of me that thinks he's mildly attractive. There's no other explanation as to why except for the fact that he's funny. But that's just my viewpoint, and I'm fairly young, so what the hell do I know?

What about this hang up with being tall? It seems like girls look past guys of shorter height. 5-5" fun and hilarious here...

Hell yeah it makes a guy more attractive! I would definitely take a less attractive guy with a killer sense of humor than a man that's only good for eye candy!

Depends on the maturity level of the women. Girls still want the eye candy even if they have the personality of a log. Women hopefully mature enough to overlook the physical characteristics...hopefully cuz I'm a funny motherf*&$er but not the hottest dude on the planet.

This is such a crock. It's just women trying to avoid looking shallow. If you don't have looks or cash, say hello to being single for a long time.

Not a crock. I'm considered hot and my guy is not. He is short and overweight but hilarious and the best guy I ever met. Perhaps the women you are referring to are in their 20's and are named Paris or Brittany

Maybe you should look at the type of girls you are dating. Or perhaps look at your own personality. That could be your problem.

You're wrong John. My boyfriend weighs close to 300 pounds, has very little hair, and the hair he does have is gray. I am an attractive, petite blonde 5 years younger than he is, but I see past all that. His intelligence and sense of humor attracted me, the way he treats me with kindness made me stay, and the way he makes me laugh and keeps me happy made me love him. I can speak from experience that larger men are better in bed as well. Ladies, if you don't believe me, give it a try and see if I'm wrong. BTW - John, I make more money that he does. How does that fit your theory?

Looks fade. A wicked sense of humor is waaaaayyy more attractive than a pretty face and hot bod- both are dimished with age- but a quick wit has staying power!

This is totally true, but not necessarily for the reasons cited in the article. Humorous guys are FUN to be with! Very attractive guys tend to be stuck on themselves. They expect everyone to make them the center of attention, which can get very old, very quickly. They're oblivious to your presence; they're all about taking for themselves without giving anything in return.
Guys that are funny are far more enjoyable to be with, because they're more comfortable in their own skin and tend to see the silver lining in every cloud. Face it - life always comes with its ups and downs. If you can spend your time with someone that keeps you laughing, the bad times are far more tolerable. Looks fade; personality and humor lasts indefinitely. The traits I look for in a man include strong intellect, good communications skills, excellent hygiene and a great sense of humor. I don't need a man to provide for me; I need him to be a sensual kisser with a high need for affection.

I agree, a good sense of humor is one of the most important things, intelligence is the other. Good looks are just a bonus.

I personally would not be able to look past the guy's weight. Call me superficial, but I don't think fat is attractive, nor do I want a guy whose health is compromised by his weight and eating habits. Being funny or witty is nice, but that just wouldn't be enough for me to date someone with a weight issue. Oh, and baldness...ugh. I don't want to date someone whose head looks like a cue ball. I like a good head of hair on my guy.
