After reading last week's story of a woman who found her date rapist on Facebook, we knew it was only a matter of time until the social-networking site became a tool for crime victims to fight back. A U.K. man has started a Facebook group called "Find the Sale RAPIST" after his fiancé was sexually assaulted last year. More than 5,000 people have since joined the group. The homepage includes a detailed description of the rapist, along with CCTV images of the attacker, in the hopes that the online group might help "bring this sick pervert to justice."
But police have warned the fiancé to take down the Facebook group, fearing it could prejudice a future trial or lead to vigilante attacks on the suspected rapist. The fiancé argues that the privacy rights of the rapist are being prioritized over his girlfriend's safety. "If he's not caught, there won't be a court case at all," he says. "I'd ask anyone who recognizes the man to contact police."
Which begs the question: Should Internet vigilantes be allowed to use Facebook and other online tools to fight crime?

Rape should be a crime punishable by death. It's a complete outrage that a rapist can rape someone and might be out of prison in a year. So I can't say I find myself sympathetic with anyone who's ever raped anyone.
