Pierriette Hopkins, 30, has literally knocked down walls and climbed great heights. The Newark, N.J., construction worker proves herself every day in a field dominated by men.

Why We Love Her: Hopkins got into the business -- only 8 percent of which is made up of women -- out of necessity. After her father died, she could no longer afford tuition at New York University. She knew she didn't want to go down the same path as some of her 16 older siblings, who got caught up in drugs and crime. So she went to work, spending a decade at non-union jobs with unstable hours, wages and working conditions.

At one job site, she narrowly avoided a serious accident when her ladder broke in half while she was two stories up. Hopkins, who is actually afraid of heights, survived by hanging onto to the side of a window frame and still managed to finish her job that day.

In addition to the grueling physical demands, Hopkins has also had to learn to hold her own around her co-workers, who are all men. Anytime she's spoken up about their filthy talking, they've told her she's "one of the boys."

Quote: "I am dedicated and feel like women can take on any job, not only construction. They see one [woman], then there [will be] 20, and they will have to accept it."
