Life during World War II forced people to make all sorts of sacrifices: food rations, nylon pantyhose, raising a baby elephant in your backyard. WHAAAA?!The Belfast Zoo is currently trying to identify the woman known only as the "Elephant Angel" who temporarily adopted a baby elephant to save its life during the Belfast Blitz in 1941.
The zoo was forced to euthanize some hyenas, bears and wolves at the time because they could wreak serious havoc if bombs destroyed the zoo walls.

But the mystery woman stepped forward and volunteered to care for the elephant instead of having it put down.
Now, on the zoo's 75th anniversary, officials want to find and release the identity of the woman. All they have to go on is an old black-and-white photograph and a hunch that the lady lived in the northern part of Belfast.
We're guessing if you kept an elephant in your backyard, you would probably tell your grandchildren about it. After all, an Elephant Angel never forgets.
Miniature Mammals!
Dwarf Hippopotamus: Dwarf hippos originated in West Africa and tend to be reclusive and nocturnal animals. And very, very cute.

Wow, Mike - wtg on trying to ruin a nice, touching story. Maybe you should crawl back under the rock you came from.

Well I would rather the elephant be used for food than killed simply becuase of the questionable havoc it might cause if a bomb took out the zoo walls. Now I am not saying that it was not the right preemptive strike by the zoo, simply that if the two choices were kill for nothing or for food, I would take food anyday!

Mike what a man you must be. My bad you must be a jackass to say something like that about people you don't know. Get a life and stay true to something you do know. And that may be nothing. The woman was kind and did something nice.

Regarding the miniature animals above they are adorable. I found a miniature tree like plant that moves like an animal. The TickleMe Plant houseplant will close its leaves and lower its branches when tickled. I thought aol readers would enjoy growing their own miniature rain forest plant like I do with my school kids. Search The TickleMe Plant to find a little greenhouse or kit to grow your own. Your friends or students won't believe it is real!

Ah yes. I'm very familiar with the ever elusive, tickle me, track-a-black, rustle-em-down, toss-em-on-a-slave-ship plant. The only reason the Jamaicans still hold a grudge is because the plant refuses to comply when they dry them out and smoke them.

another cool thing some people dont know about the TickleMe Plant is that it can grow over 3ft tall and many of my students plants have pink flowers.
Put one in a dark room and it will close up and go to sleep. put your TickleMe Plant on in the light and it opens in ten minutes..lie the plant on its side and it will bend up to the sun in less than....TickleMe Plants were used for the opening premier of CSI this year as a murder clue

Does anybody who reads these stories ever comment on the actual story? And why is there always some moron who has to say something nasty? I think internet acess should be denied to some people.
I hope they find the Angel that saved this elephant--she should be known, honored, and thanked for being such a selfless soul.

Typical religious idiocy. That woman is not an angel, they don't exist. She is simply a very kind person who stepped forward to help out a zoo. That's it. The only mystery is who she is, not what.

There's a screen play begging to be written for this story. Any budding Gollywood writers eager to take a swing?

hello, panty hose were not even invented yet--and sandlionarrakis, why the flap about the word angle? what are you afraid of? On what grounds do you base your statement? No one thought atoms existed, the world was flat, women determined the sex of a child, and landing on the moon was impossible. Dah.
