Unlike some people we went to high school with, one Indiana teen is hoping to keep her pants on at the prom this year. In fact, she's suing her school so that she can ditch the typical prom dress and wear pants to the big event. The unnamed 17-year old lesbian is suing because she thinks Lebanon High School's dress code for prom, which obligates her to wear a dress to the dance, is discriminatory. In her opinion, dresses are not part of her sexual identity.
The ACLU has got her back on this one, saying the school's policy violates the Constitution by creating a disparity in the treatment of male and female students.

In fact, the organization has an entire guide to LGBT teens' rights in high school, which includes such tricky situations as when a student is forbidden to bring a same-sex date to prom or if a person is outed at school.
Lebanon High is willing to cooperate and also willing to discuss out of court the possibility of allowing the student to wear a pantsuit instead. Pantsuit?! She's 17, not 87! It sounds like this high school is behind the times in more ways than one.

I just continue to find it hilarious how people want to change rules to best fit WHAT THEY WANT. I bet this school has been doing just fine for years and years with the rules they have in place but today, OH NO!, we have to change everything so some idiotic kid can wear pants. I know, lets just have no rules, thats it, we have all problems solved. LET CHAOS REIGHN!!!!!!

The school rule is likely a holdover from the 50's. When I was in public high school in the 1960's; we staged a sit-in that led to over 1/2 the school walking out of class over the right of girls to wear PANTS TO SCHOOL. Back then it was dress code for girls to wear a dress or skirt. We won. Saying that girls have to wear a dress is high discrimination.

I believe that this is still Te United States and for a school to deny her to wear a suit or pants the school is wrong. This day and age let her wear what she wants as far as the tux or suit to the prom. This is their day to enjoy and for her to be denied based on the schools dress code for girls its WRONG. I am 51 and I believe people let their ignorance get in the way of other peoples lives. If I were her I would fight it for it is your right as a United States citizen. You go girl!

This is typical homophobic reaction,,my daughter didn't attend her prom because the school refused to let her attend with her best friend who is female, neither of them are lesbian however the school said other students might think they were, what difference does it make,it's there last big school event before graduation,I'm so glad that all my kids have graduated and gone on to good jobs, high school in this country is so damn stressful on the student and the parents with there homophobic draconian ideas, wake up America were not in the 18th century anymore, whats next "Witch Finder General" to flush out all the undesirebals in school,we have bigger and better things to worry about than a girl or boys sexual orientation.

WTF... Some Lesbo wants to ruin the event for the whole school. They will end up cancelling the event b/c neither side will be able to come up with a respectful dress code for this b$tch.... If she really wants to be dressed like a guy get a sex change then she will be able to go to the prom in pants.... To many f-n liberals out there who will stand up for her.... Time to make some changes and stand up for the NORMS in this Country......

Sounds to me like this girl is just trying to get attention and force her confusions on other people. The children of this country are spinning out of control because they are given too many choices. We can thank the school systems for that. Treating our children (starting in preschool) like they are little adults. This is a politically correct world and it is very depressing when out children can pull something like this and get away with it. I would be ashamed to say that was my daughter. Children AND adults think that they can just brake or change the rules according to what THEY want. Isn't that what America is all about now? What is this girl going to demand next? Follow the rules or miss your prom. If I was her mother that is what I would be telling her. Pretty pathetic this girl is.

no pretty pathetic you are... living in todays society..it's good to be treated with respect as an adult if you ask me. Life is all about change..it doesn't matter how it was when your kids were in high school...if that was the case we would probably still be riding on ban-wagons... i can pretty much tell str8 off the back that you are homophobic. That's your problem...and if everyone actually went by the rules, then this whole world would be even more F'd up!!! THINK ABOUT IT...

Wow, it is amazing how hipocritical people can be. Since when did people start living without sin? It's funny how people like to "pick and choose" the parts of the bible that they want to use. Adam and Eve, yes, I agree with you on the bible saying that. However, does no one recall the story of casting the first stone against the sinner? Jesus said that Ye without sin cast the first stone. Point being, all of us have sinned and live in sin. It would make us hypocrits to judge anyone elses sin besides our own. A sin, whether it be a white lie or murder, is still a sin in the eyes of God. I myself am in a lesbian relationship and I love her very much. She is the best thing that has ever happened to me. I am a nurse and she is in school to be a teacher. We pay our bills and our taxes just like everyone else. Now, with that being said, what makes you any better than me? Who I chose to love does not implicate your life what so ever. Therefore, let it be and lets focus on bigger issues surrounding our country right now.

Force her confusion on others, you have no prblem forcing your religion on others. That is what this is about, you can ban anything and anyone FROM YOUR CHURCH. When that ban reaches out to include legal [secular] rights is where you decide to establish a state church. This along with banning slavery, or womens sufferage is no longer legal. Don't talk about her forcing herself on your veiw to defend your bigotry.

nice list of girl crushes! Though there were a couple of the standards in there, glad to see a few legitimate lesbians in there as well as some unusual hetero choices. (Especially Helen Mirren, she looks great for any age!) Happy that Rosario Dawson made the list as well!

What are we teaching our children when we make it mandatory to wear a dress? Too much is stressed upon Prom. Prom is a time of celebration, a milestone in many lives. WHO CARES WHAT THEY WEAR??? This country has students drop out of high school every hour of the day. Students who work hard and make it to Prom should have the right to express who they are and wear what they want. THIS IS AMERICA 2009!
