Today I'm lucky enough to be chatting with close personal friend and comedy icon, David Wain. With co-conspirators Michael Ian Black and Michael Showalter, David helped create the sketch shows "The State" (back in the glory days of MTV) and "Stella." When he's not writing and directing movies ("Wet Hot American Summer," the brilliant camp spoof, and "Role Models," with dreamy Paul Rudd, which hits DVD shelves this week), David likes hangin' with his cat and appearing in his Web series, Wainy Days.
CJ: There's nothing that chicks love more than men with babies. You have an adorable baby. Can I post pictures of him on my blog, or are you trying to shelter him from the Hollywood spotlight?
David: You guessed right. I'm very much trying to shelter him, particularly from the Internet spotlight. So, alas. No pics for you!
CJ: You have a cat. Can I post a picture of your cat, or are you trying to shelter him from the Hollywood spotlight?
David: Yes, my cat, Morgan, is a major celebrity and very used to the spotlight. You can post lots of pics of him.
CJ: I visited the set of "Role Models" one day. Were you nervous to have me there? Do you even remember me being there?
David: I very much would love, more than anything, to say that I remember you visiting the set. I could then relate a little story about what was going on that day and how fun it was to see you and how you affected the final movie. But truth being my guiding light, I'm compelled to say I have zero memory of this.
CJ: That's OK, I was there for like 10 minutes and you were doing a million things ... What is the first album you ever bought with your own money, and what was the first concert you ever went to?
David: First album ... I really don't remember. But I do remember buying my first CD, which was "Learning to Crawl" by the Pretenders
. I think maybe my first LP was "Get the Knack." First concert: Rolling Stones "Tattoo You" tour, fall 1981, Cleveland Coliseum.CJ: You're responsible for the Internet hit "Wainy Days," where you force my poor boyfriend (actor Mather Zickel) to have a three-way with Elizabeth Banks and Alicia Witt. Does this turn you on?
David: Yes.
CJ: I noticed that you do a lot of making out in your series as well, and I've noticed that you've made out with several of your friends' girlfriends and wives in the show. Is the show just an excuse for you to make out with hot Hollywood starlets and your friends' girlfriends and wives or do you actually care about comedy?
David: It's primarily an excuse to make out with girls. The problem is that it's really not quite as fun when the camera's rolling and I end up getting shy. And wait, what? Friends' girlfriends and wives? Yuck to that!
CJ: Please tell Lemondrop readers something about yourself that nobody else knows, something you've never revealed in any other interview so that I can have a breaking-news story.

David: I've never been to Cuba.
CJ: Mather and I watched the Oscars with you (pic at right), and I showed up drunk and fell asleep on your sofa. How did you feel about that?
David: I thought it was cute. You were real tuckered out.
CJ: Do you ever think of pursuing a career in the field of your first love .... magic?
David: I did for the first 13 years of my life, very seriously. In fact, it's the only thing I thought about. My magic teacher at the time said, "When you start getting interested in girls, magic's gonna go by the wayside." And I said, "Maybe for other guys, not for me." But he was totally right.
CJ: How long is this Stella thing going to go on for?
David: We started in January of 1997... still going!
CJ: David, I really want to thank you for taking time out of your busy day to answer my jackass questions. Your Lemondrop travel coffee mug will be in the mail shortly.David: Always a pleasure, CJ! I just hope your readers check out "Role Models" on DVD and BluRay, and more episodes of "Wainy Days" coming soon!

CJ! You are master interviewer. Babs Walters beware! I love the personal touch about falling asleep on his couch.

Fun interview with one of my favorite creative folks, CJ. I'm exceptionally fond of your style --- constantly referencing yourself and your experiences while interviewing others. You're like a much hotter and more interesting David Steinberg.
Remember that time I said you were hot in a comment box and then ruined it by comparing you to David Steinberg? How did that make you feel?
Word to your Mather. Looking forward to your next LemonDrop read.

Very nice, CJ :) Looking forward to your interview with Mather. Can we get some cat pics then, too?
And maybe another mention of the dreamy Paul Rudd?
