Expiration Date (n.): The arbitrary time and day of the week after which you decide that you will no longer accept a date invitation for either Friday or Saturday night (this is usually around 9pm Wednesday evening).

You tell yourself that if you do hear from your date target before then, the date is on! However, if you don't hear from him by that time, then you'll automatically say that you're busy and offer a daytime date instead -- even if you are free.

You remember reading about this tactic in a dating book (maybe "The Rules"?) a few years back and the idea has always stuck. You would never tell anyone about this strategy, because even you know that it will sound psycho if you tried to explain it.
