Speaking out against sexual abuse is difficult -- especially if the abuser is a loved one. Imagine how a 27-year-old woman from Brooklyn, N.Y., felt this week when she took the stand against her father -- whom she claims molested her from age 9 to 16 -- and was coldly cross-examined by him. Rabbi Israel Weingarten questioned and scolded the young woman, claiming that her allegations were untrue and stating that if she'd actually been abused she would have told someone. The rabbi also raised the ire of the judge. "You have already created a fairly untenable and horrific situation by your deciding to represent yourself," said Judge John Gleason. "Now, I'm not sure where this cross-examination is going, but I know you are not going to lecture this witness."
Even the rabbi's own counsel is stunned by his behavior. "Is it possible it could get any worse than this?" said Weingarten's legal adviser, Barry Rhodes. The rabbi faces up to 50 years if convicted.

There is an excellent children's book to help children who it is either known, or suspected, are being sexually abused. It is a faith-based book and they included the faith element because it is the child's real story, fictionally told, and he relied on faith to help him, and also because many children are threatened and silenced by abusers using faith as a weapon. The book is easy to read, small and discreet in size, and something children will be attracted to and will want to read. The first in a series of four. The second, David's Shield, is about to begin publishing and has been endorsed by the Chaplain of the New England Patriots and Award-Winning Singer/Songwriter Natalie Grant among others. It has already been added to Resource Lists in many places and is a safe and tasteful tool to help children share. The title of the book is David's Sword by David, Lee and Marybeth Elliott. It can be purchased or ordered at any bookstore in the U.S. or you may visit David's Sword Dot Com for an autographed copy.

Thank you for telling about this book. It does sound like a great resource for children and if Natalie Grant endorsed it, I would trust that it's really, really a good resouce.

This is a SHAME......
What makes it so bad is that it goes on all the time with men in authority...
They are pedophiles hiding behind armor of trust .
this is why they get in to these positions...they put on a big FRONT and all the time they looking when they can get the opportunity to molest your kids.....
I don't trust ANYBODY...especially MEN in authority...like Rabbis, priest, Peachers, teachers, etc...NOBODY....with my kids
This man should be hung and thrown in JAIL..
.
What a shame....a rabbi...
How many kids have he molest?
There are a lot of Rabbis guilty of Rape...some went back to Isreal to excape trial here in USA....
SHAMEFUL....News...in a Close knit community
And what's even worse...when they do this, .. a lot of times they do not get JAIL time, fearing they would tarnish their IMAGE
It is not even shown on TV so everybody can see....it is COVERED UP because they have money to do this...JERKS!

shellfish,
you need to understand ONE thing: not ALL men are out to hurt your kids. and there are ALOT of WOMEN who are pedophiles, too. as a parent, you need to use DISCRETION in who you let around your children. sometimes, that MAN in authority will be the one that will save your kids life, or at the very least, the best mentor money can't buy.
and there have been plenty of stories on sitcoms and tv dramas and a few movies that discuss how ppl in authority abuse it. do you want this to make court tv? the chances of that happening are quite unlikely as the ppl involved don't bring in the ratings. but if you watch your local/regional news, read your local/regional newspaper and of course, purused the internet, you'd see the stories are being told AND ppl ARE listening.
i seriously DOUBT this guy is gonna get away with ANYTHING. if there's ONE thing judges and juries HATE, it's when the accused tries to make the victim out to be the bad guy. a LECTURE? c'mon! all it takes is a few rebuttal witnesses who specialize in working with victims of sex crimes to squash any of his arguments. plus, it wouldn't hurt to have a biased juror or two who think just like you.
it's sad that this happened, but i see a bright outcome for the victim. :)
