When my husband and I first started dating, I knew he wasn't the most romantic fish in the sea. It was a quality I really liked about him. He wasn't the random-flower-giving sort or the shower you with compliments sort, and I was fine with that. What I didn't know is that our first Valentine's Day as a couple would be a FAIL of epic proportions.

On our first February 14th, he gave me ... nothing. NOTHING. While I'd like to act like I was above Valentine's Day gifts, I wasn't. By "gift," I mean something as small as a card or an acknowledgment of the day ... or something shiny. I'm not picky.

I know it all sounds sort of materialistic. But the thing is: It wouldn't have been surprising if he'd mentioned some anti-establishment sentiment or conspiracy theory about Valentine's Day being a big wad of corporate crap. I can follow theories. What I couldn't follow was ignoring a grand ol' holiday for no reason.

So I'm sure you can see how this went, right?

Girl meets Boy. Girl falls in love with Boy. Boy forgets/ignores/boycotts Valentine's Day? That is SO not in the book.

Like any mature adult, I threw a hissy fit and pulled the silent treatment. After all, had I known that Valentine's was canceled that year, I would not have spent hours in the card section of a local store trying to find one that conveyed my feelings while managing to be humorous. A card that was just right: capturing love yet not making me sound like a sap. Hours, I spent. All to find out that he had taken it upon himself to quietly cancel Valentine's Day.

MY Valentine's Day.

It is safe to say that after a long talk and tears on my part, we celebrated Valentine's Day on February 15th ... and have done so every year since.
