Nobody has benefits anymore, so we're offering up the one resource we all have: other people's mothers. Each week a staff mom (nurse, guidance counselor, lawyer and shrink) will answer a question. This week, it's work Q&A with Julie's Mom the Guidance Counselor.

"I just graduated from college with an English degree. I have NO IDEA what I want to do with my life. Help! How do I get focused?"

Julie's Mom says:
"Ah, the ubiquitous English degree! Sometimes I think colleges offer English majors just so they can force students to go to graduate school. After all, what can one do with an English degree -- Teach? Write? Hang out in coffee shops?

"You need to step back and take stock. If you can afford it, look up the nearest career counselor and schedule a session.

"
If you can't, make an appointment at your local state employment service. (They're in the same place as the unemployment service!) They will give you a battery of tests to find out what kind of work you're best suited to do. And it's FREE!

"Or, go to your college career counseling office. They'll help you out too. You will probably be surprised to learn that you have many marketable skills.

"Don't think you have to make life-altering decisions at this point. Just try to focus on making a plan for yourself for the next few years. Remember: You are a work in progress!"

Julie's Mom the Guidance Counselor
is a licensed professional counselor. She holds a masters degree in school public relations, has been a school guidance counselor for 20 years and has extensive experience in career planning.
