Actress Salma Hayek recently traveled to Sierra Leone to raise awareness about tetanus, a leading cause of death in the developing world. While there, she witnessed firsthand the devastating effects of extreme poverty. Hayek, who has a 16-month-old daughter named Valentina, was moved to offer herself quite literally to a starving child. In front of Nightline cameras, Hayek began breast-feeding a hungry African baby.

I agree with you Mac. It was a very admirable gesture. As far as Rachel's comments... it is a contradiction to say it's alright to breastfeed an adopted child and then disagree with what Salma did, simply because Adopted Children still aren't Biological Children. The same point you make would apply to them also. She saw an immediate need and took care of it. No one knows if she extended that help via any financial contributions or not (we must not judge what we do not know).

I concur.
It's amazing how many people wuill throw money at a problem--but never deign to actually DO anything to help.
Her beautiful soul shines through her like a beacon--and her ex?
a HUGE jerk who didn't know WHAT he had.
I pity him.

... there are some who seem to missing the point that's being made here. The baby was not being feed because of starvation, but instead, simply because of hunger. Salma took the hungry child and feed it (it's obvious by the looks of the baby that it was not malnourished... but was simply hungry). Those of you with children, "Do you feed your children simply because they are hungry... or only if they become malnourished?" According to the video report, Salma was attempting to convey a message of encouragement to the young mothers that they should breastfeed their hungry children (although one could say that the demonstration could be considered as "over-the-top" so to speak... at least the baby benefited regardless)

For the 18% that thought it was wierd for her to breast feed someone else baby obviously didn't know that it was black nannies that breast fed little white babies when their white mothers were too dried up to provide milk.

A truely beautiful act. Women stimulate breast milk to breastfeed adopted babies, it's no less a heroic act. She gave that child another chance at life. If you had a big mac, would you not give it to a starving child on the street?

Now, I get what Salma was trying to do but I wonder if she would have pulled out her breast and fed an American starving baby?? NO, she would have gave that child food, or money, or a bottle. I guess because that child was poor and African, she felt she could throw her breast in the childs mouth.
Now mind you, I have breast fed both of my kids and I think it is ok to breast feed your own kids, or even an adopted child. But you do not take it upon yourself to put your breast in the mouth of a child that is not yours, I don't care. Who is to say what diseases this woman may carry?? Was she tested first before she gave that child it's milk??? probably not. That is what upsets me the most about this situation. If you ask me she took that African mother and child for granted, just for the sake of some publicity.
If she really wanted to help the child, she should ask her Billionaire boyfreind to give her some money so the child can eat for weeks/months, not just one day.
I am sorry I do not approve of what she did at all.

You can't just jump to that conclusion, maybe she would have offered her breast to the American baby you never know what is going through someones head.
But you do have a point what if the baby is HIV + and has an open sore and Selma had a cracked nipple then the virus could spread that way but the chances of contracting it that way is very small.
Yes you breastfed your babies but why do people have such a hard time with boobs? She's just doing what is natural FEEDING A BABY!

Well Rachel, I'm sure then you have never heard of a wetnurse. Women have paid in the past to have other women who were nursing their own children to nurse theirs as well because of the health benefits. If it grosses you out then perhaps you are seriously a selfish self-absorbed person. A baby is a baby in my eyes and they are all innocent and deserving of care no matter who they belong to.

On some level, I also see it as an act of altruism. However, I also agree with some of what Rachel says. I think she did take the mother for granted, although I'm not sure it was purely for publicity. I think Salma's maternal instinct kicked in and she wanted to help, but how would she feel if an African woman stuck her breast in her child's mouth? I also can't help but note that this child did not look like he/she was starving. In fact, the baby appears a lot healthier than most of the African babies we get to see on camera.

One, you are not carrying around a cooler full of baby milk or even formula when you go to these places. They need was now, not later I will make sure the baby gets feed soon as they can get the supplies here. That baby needed it now. As far as adopted child vs, this starving child , neither are hers, they are some one elses baby they both need to be fed, one much sooner than the other. Open your eyes woman, would you walk past that baby know your full and it will not get to eat if you don't share what you have. This is a human being, no matter where they are from and who they are from.

Again, another stupid remark. You do not hand money out in a place like that, they kill for it. As for her Rich husband, they do a lot of their own giving, which if you researched you would know that. However, she is working with, Pampers to also give to children, all over that are starving, and this way it helps some one like me who is not rich to give by buying products from that company, they donate a portion to the foundation of starving children, universally. Stop condeming and start helping and being greatful there are people like her out there.

Glad not everyone in this world thinks like you do. Ever hear of "wet nursing"?
Do you think our ancestors had baby bottles and formula? Many women wet nursed or had wet nurse for their children if they themselves could not breastfeed. Many of my friends when I had my son would share breastfeeding with others of our group. I applaud Salma for her generousity and strength.

It is no different than using a wet nurse...
I am currently breastfeeding and think it is a wonderful thing that she did...I personally would have pumped then given it to the child but it is the thought that counts. However, she was using a nipple guard. I know many women who pump more then they can use, their freezers are full of milk and they wish they new a way to pass it on to other children in need. If anyone knows of a place that allows you to donate breastmilk please, let me know.
Also, the comment about her billionaire boyfriend...ridiculous! They are no longer together plus, there is something more honourable about going out and giving of yourself instead of just throwing money at a problem.
