$33,000 of debt

Kristi realized her dream of attending private Christian university Liberty ... and racked up a $33,000 school debt in the process. It's a decision she now regrets. "Looking back, I wish I had gone to a community college for the first two years and then to a school where I could use the last two years to really focus on my specialized major classes," says Kristi. "When I have children, they are definitely going to a community college for the first two years!"

Unfortunately, the financial burden of attending a two-year public university has also increased. "Measuring Up 2008" notes that the percentage of median family income going toward these two-year college costs has increased by as much as 9 percent from 1999-2000 to 2007-2008. (Percentages range from 2-3 percent for high and upper-middle-class families, and 5-9 percent for middle- and lower-income families.)
