The girl: Erin, a fashion and lifestyle writer.

The scene: Glamour Shots portrait studio, Irving, Tex., circa 1992.

The look: "I don't know which is scarier -- this photo, or the fact that Glamour Shots is still in business. But at my Texas junior high school, being assaulted with makeup, sequins and a teasing comb ("the higher the hair, the closer to God") was a rite of passage.

"I wasn't allowed to wear makeup at the time, so it was particularly thrilling to have foundation caked into my virgin pores. So thrilling, in fact, that I didn't seem to notice that my hairdresser was giving me The Grease 'Do: big, pouffy, curly and comprised of at least one bottle of White Rain hairspray. I may have looked like an extra from "Little Miss Sunshine," but I felt like Debbie Gibson. Make that Debbie Gibson at a Fourth of July rodeo ... but hey, the girls at school were impressed.
