Love your cat a lot (maybe too much)? Want to have a little piece of your kitty with you even after she's gone? Then have cat groomer Danelle German make a handbag out of your cat's fur. Danelle takes the extra hair she shaves off of her Persian cat clients and spins it into yarn. She then knits the furry skeins into kitten-soft purses and sweaters.A great way to keep your beloved pet close to your heart, or totally gross? You decide.

So it's like when your mother dies, you shave her head bald and use her hair to line the top of your trendy snakeskin boots. It's in memoriam, so it's completely respectful, right? Although I am happy to hear that no cats are actually harmed in the making of these items, I still register the gross factor to be pretty high. Eww.

there is nothing wrong in using animal fur to spin yarn, after all thats where sheep wool for sweaters comes from, I spin my Great Pyrnees shedding undercoat and once raised angora rabbits for their comed fur to spin. Camel and llama and vicuna wool is spun. It isnt like the Chinese culture that skins cats and dogs for clothing trim.

Yeah thats kinda gross I agree with you. Something for people to think about would you make shoes or a purce out of you're dead family memeber? Like you're husband, daughter, father or mother? Sick

When you use "... it's like shaving your dead mother's hair to use it on your trendy snakeskin boots," you're missing the point. The cat is NOT dead, nor is it a HUMAN or human family member. People kill many animals, including endangered animals, for their fur. These cats are not being harmed. Using cat fur is, at best, a wonderful alternative to some other possible fur choices, at worst, an odd practice that is a bit on the gross side. Shaving your dead mother's hair and wearing it is a poor example to use as a comparison and a gross exaggeration.

OMG! I want to apologize, I did not see that it said "after she's gone." Some persians do need to have hair cuts and left-over fur from living cats' hair cuts could be used in making these items, which is the point I was getting to in my last response. Very sorry for misreading and commenting back ignorantly because of it! Now I very much agree with you!!! That's terrible, like taxidermy. ICK!!!

I have an 11 1/2 year old Newfoundland - a real treasure. When I brush her I save the undercoat and fur that is removed during natural grooming. I've had her fur spun into yarn and own the most incredibly beautiful, not to mention warm, mittens as well as a fantastic winter hat. I've never been warmer. This Christmas I had a pair of socks made for husband - again you couldn't ask for anything softer and warmer. The yarn was mixed with Alpacca (no one balks at the use of their fur) and then felted for added warmth. When Ebony is no longer with us - I'll certainly treasure these items even more. It's no different than any other yarn or fabric made from animals. I don't even have my girl shaved - it's the natural grooming process. And the items have an extra specialness to them because of their origin. Try it - you might change your mind.

No - NOT the same. A cat is an animal. Your mom is a person. Much higher in terms of importance.

You probably eat steak while wearing a wool sweater carrying a very trendy handbag.

Really gross!! Has respect for animals gone out the window? With all the yarn available for sweaters, purses, etc.,, there is no excuse for this!!

How is using the shed or shaved fur of animals disrepectful? They aren't using it. They haven't been harmed to get it. And it has to be removed to keep their coats healthy. It's okay to use sheep's wool, but not a cat's fur?

They need to have their hair cut. They are persian cats and have naturally long hair. This is showing the animal respect. The process to get this excess fur causing the animal no harm and is involved in taking good care of the animal's health. Fur-fanatics could choose this fur instead of other furs that involve abuse, neglect or death to procure. Calling this disrespect to animals is completely unvalidated.

Why are you people saying this is no respect for the cats? Did we forget about all those other animals MURDERED?? Why? To wear a cool hat with fuzzy stuff on it called "fur"? What about all that fake fur that looks EXACTLY like the real stuff? Might as well shave the animals since they will shed the hair anyway rather than KILL them. Even elephants are killed regularly why? For a (that's right A as in ONE) bar of soap from the tusk. The entire massive elephant is murdered for it's tusk!! Why not put it to sleep and cut if off? Well, it was explained that those that kill them don't "feel" like going through the extra trouble to put them to sleep it's easier to just kill them. Now you're complaining about a cat having it's hair shaved off? Big deal at least it's not dead!!

OK Nicole, First thing you should do in the morning is go get fixed. NOONE that stupid should be allowed to breed.Read this part very carefully : IVORY is just the name of the soap. Its named that because it,looks like Ivory not because its made from ivory.

Disrespectful of animals? Uh...Where do you think cashmere and wool and pashmina and angora etc. etc. come from? You know society has "developed" too much when people think it's gross or "disrespectful" to do what humans have been doing for thousands of years, and using the most natural and earth friendly form of warmth and textile making that there is. The cats aren't hurt, and animals have been shorn for eons so that their fur can be used. The fur grows back (provided the animal hasn't died). Seems an ideal cycle. With all the processing and chemicals and pollution that goes into manufacturing cotton and other textiles today, it's really sad that an environmentally friendly, natural, and historically normal process is even considered debate worthy. What have we become as a society?

Where do you think all that "other" yarn comes from?? It comes from ANIMALS: sheep primarily but also goats, rabbits.alpaca, etc. In most cases, it is the by-product of mormal and necessary grooming.
