While it's never a good idea for teen girls to be careless about birth control, it's a little less hazardous for lesbians -- right? Not according to a new study from the University of British Columbia, which found that bisexual teen girls are about 10 times more likely to get pregnant than their heterosexual peers, and lesbians are about six and a half times as likely.
Why are so many young gay girls getting pregnant? Turns out, it's often not an accident. "Even though teen parenthood isn't very valued and it's not all that respected, per se, it is a more positive identity in some places than being gay, lesbian or bisexual," says study author Elizabeth Saewyc. "For some, it may be that they've been told that this is abnormal and wrong, and they may think: 'Well, if I just have sex with enough opposite-gender people, that will cure me.'"

The study and analysis may seem a little extreme -- young girls are getting pregnant to avoid facing the shame of their sexuality? -- but other research reinforces the findings. A study from the University of Minnesota found that lesbian, bisexual and questioning adolescent females were as likely as heterosexuals to engage in male/female intercourse, but had a pregnancy rate (12.3 percent) almost seven percent higher than straight girls.
Personal experience tells the same tale. Take lesbian blogger Cecelia Brown, who got pregnant in the early '80s while pretending to be straight. "When I was young, I knew I was different than everyone else. The only thing I ever heard when I was growing up was how 'queers were *&%#*& perverts,'" she says. "I spent my time trying to pretend I was someone else, straight. As a result I ended up not with just one unintended pregnancy but two." Read her take on the Canadian study here.

A lesbian is someone who is sexually attracted to women. I think you might be very young to think that lesbians only ever have sex with women. Most lesbians (and gays in general) go through a tumultuous period where they know how they feel but they don't want to face it. For instance, I knew a gay guy who went to prom with a girl and even kissed her. He did it because he thought he should, but he was so sickened that he threw up later.
You clearly have no idea what the dictionary definition of a lesbian is, so please try to educate yourself next time before spouting your ignorant nonsense.

I'm sorry, but you simply cannot say that you wouldn't have gay sex to blend in with the norm if that was the norm...because it's NOT. You CANNOT judge those people. You have no idea what it's like for them. You are not in their shoes. So you have absolutely no idea how you would react in such a situation.
Frankly, I have met gay people who had sex with lots of people of the opposite sex because they were trying so hard to not be gay anymore. What's sad is that they honestly feel like there is something "wrong" with them, simply because of their sexual preference.
Perhaps you should reconsider your position.

If gays/lesbians are repulsed by heterosexual sex then they should be understanding when heterosexuals say they are repulsed by gay sex. It is 2009 and gay culture has been openly celebrated for many years and it is encouraged on shows geared toward young people, e.g. MTV. Also another person's religion should not determine the way you feel about yourself. Just open the phone book and you can find the religion of your choice. Freedom of religion is a right in America and diversity does not mean we must all think alike. I do not feel that our cultures and traditions should be changed for a minority of people. Majority rules. And I do not agree with human behavior being compared to other animals. It is okay for a dog to sniff another dogs butt on meeting but that is not acceptable in people society. By the way, I am not a right wing fundamentalist.

This is very sad. I read and hear so many things aimed at "shaming" gays and trying to "cure" them as if it's some kind of disease. What difference does it make who we choose to love? I am straight. I have tons of straight, gay, and bi friends. You know why we're friends, because they are all GOOD people. What difference does it make who they share their beds with, they are all consenting adults. What 2 consenting adults do in the dark holds no bearing on the kind of person that they are inside. And that is all that should matter. My son is only one years old, but he is being raised to be understanding, compassionate, and tolerent of all things - whether they differ from the norm or not. And it doesn't matter to me if he grows up straight, gay, bi or whatever. He is still my son and I will always love and support him no matter what. As long as the person he is with is a good person and treats him right and makes him happy, what should it matter what gender they happen to be?

I agree with R! You couldn't get me to have gay sex if it were the norm, because it is a perversion, the same as beastiality. As a women, I love men, and everything about men. When I look at another woman, it is for her haircut idea and her clothing selection, I would NEVER look at another woman with LUST!! Please!! ...And, 'RyanG' brought the Christian Agenda, well, DUH....if you follow the Bible your life will be so much easier! And...by the way....in the Bible, homosexuality is called an abomination before GOD. Oh I know you all are gonna have a cow reading this, but relax, it's just my opinion, as I have read yours.

Do you think that maybe these little lesbians and bisexual girls experimenting with their sexuality because they feel shame might be messing with the heads of the little straight dudes they are screwing for reason other than love or attraction. Ya think? And then adding pregnancy to the equation. Wow! Seems morals don't apply to some people in this all about me culture.

I'm at the point where I don't care how they live, or what they have, as long as they have a job, or a family that can keep them off welfare. Lifelong welfare recipients, who aren't disabled, are breaking the back of the US.

That because they are not so matured. and do not have enough experience. All teen females are likely to be pregnant, but not lesbian. It just because they do not have enough knowledge about it. But other mature persons should remind them sometimes. Like those kind LGBT of Bimingle .com they will tell more things about it to new one. We should show love to others. but do not just to have fun.

I completely agree with R. For some reason the teens in my area think it's cool to by "bi" or "gay." I'm one of the only girls around that is not bi. I'm constantly asked out by girls and of course I always turn them down because I'm straight. I've got no problems with them, but I would never pretend to be gay to fit in. It makes them happy but it's uncomfortable for me. Let them call me weird, but that wont make me want to pretend I have different sexual preferences to "fit in." And if they were completely honestly lesbian then I don't think they would be able to have sex with men. The thought of doing that with a girl is disturbing to ME. I don't think I'd ever be able to go through with it, determined or not....

A tounge can only go so deep and I enjoy a good deep penetration as does any female, however that doesn't replace the softness of touch and feel from another female as meen seem to be lacking. My male lover is two and one half times my age and spoils me not only sexually but with kindness and respect as I do him. I'm only 25 and I would love to have his baby.

What a sexist and uneducated remark, Payback. The kind of attitude that spreads sexually transmitted disease. Thankfully, you do not speak for all men.
