Rice Krispies Treats are the ultimate in homey cereal turned snack food (maybe it was all those well-placed, childhood Kellogg's commercials?). But these days, there's more than the vanilla variety: chocolate, peanut butter and a slew of other flavors are also available (such as the Condoleeza Rice krispie treat). But can you really improve on a classic? We've tested the Krispies original against the newer, chocolate variety.

Rice Krispies Treats
Chocolate Chunk

Appearance: A beige, rectangular block of cereal, coated with marshmallow paste that looks a lot like glue.

Appearance: Nearly identical to the original treat, only brown with chocolate chunks thrown in, plus a thick layer of chocolate underneath.

Taste: A hodgepodge of familiarly fantastic flavors like butter, marshmallow and crunchy Rice Krispies cereal.

Taste: A little like s'mores on crack, what with the choc chunks and marshmallow. Major drawback: It's not really sweet. It's just amazingly bitter and hard to chew.

Our pick: Original all the way. There's a reason why they've been around a bajillion years -- they're really, really good. The chocolate, sadly, is just no competition.
