The first time it happened, 25-year-old Angie's sound sleep was interrupted by her boyfriend's wandering hands. Since he was more aggressive than normal, Angie just assumed he could not wait to have her.
Flattered by his eagerness, Angie went along with the unexpected, middle-of-the-night sex session, even climbing on top in enthusiasm. But in the morning Angie's guy complained that he had been "woken up for sex."
"I guess he woke up when I got on top, because he had no recollection of anything before that," says Angie. "He just went with it, but he assumed I started the whole thing."
Sexsomnia, or sleep sex, describes 11 different sex-related sleep disorders, most of which occur in people with other sleeping disorders, such as sleepwalking. Most never know they have the condition until a bed mate, roommate or family member (mortifying much?) has to convince them that, yes, they really were vigorously going at it with themselves or a partner in their sleep.
Click here to read more about sleep sex and how it's affected Angie's relationship.
Although Angie's boyfriend didn't believe her when she first explained that he'd initiated the encounter, eventually she convinced him. "He was really shocked and embarrassed, since he didn't remember any of it," she says. With a little research -- and factoring in his past history of sleepwalking -- they were able to piece together what was going on.
Angie has a sense of humor about her boyfriend's condition and now knows to just push him away and go back to sleep when he starts making the midnight moves. But others in the situation have felt violated by their partners' unusual bed manner.
The condition has even been brought to court. A man in Canada was recently acquitted on sexual assault charges for climbing on top of a girl passed out on his couch when he claimed sexsomnia as his defense, but the acquittal was recently overturned.
Sleep sex can be an embarrassing topic, and most aren't eager to share their condition with others, but luckily sexsomnia is treatable. Even though I may be in the elder generation, any time that the occasion arises to enjoy sex, by all means .....do!

Ok, if this is a real thing, then thats fine but now we have to worry about this being used in court. So now the next time a guy is arrested for a sex crime...how can they prove he really did it and that he isnt a "sexsomniac"?

I never got as far as Angie's boyfriend, I have initiated sexual activity but I always seem to wake up. My sister and I both would talk and even answer questions sometimes, without recalling anything in the morning. The past few years I have gotten VERY vocal saying some things I would NEVER even THINK of saying awake. I kick and hit and grab onto things... mostly my wife.
I remember hearing of someone that killed their bedmate while sleeping. I used to think it was absolutely ridiculous that anyone could use that as a legal defense... lately, I have to wonder. One night I was dreaming about trying to catch a turkey. I grabbed ahold a couple times, but it got away. Finally, I pounced on it and held fast. I woke up with my wife hitting me while I had her in a headlock! These things have gotten me worried about my own actions while sleeping, which is why I often sleep in another room.

this is probably not sexsomnia. this could be a variety of other sleep disorders, but to me it sounds like REM sleep disorder. in typical REM sleep, there is a connection between the brain and the rest of the body that shuts down, like flipping a switch, and this keeps your body from acting out everything that you are dreaming. in someone with this disorder, however, the connection is not shut off, and the body acts out some of the things that go on in the REM stage of sleeping (this is the deep sleep period, where the most intense dreaming goes on)
definitely ask your doctor about it; he or she may refer you to a sleep specialist.

Thats crazy, I thought I was the only one. Not that I mind, but, in the middle of our sleep, my fiance, just starts randomly touching me, then we end up sleeping together. In the morning he doesnt remember a thing. I really enjoy it, especially since im a light sleeper!

Lol, yeah my husband does that, too. It's never been really bad, I just push him away when I want to sleep. He never remembers it. The only time when it freaked me out was when I woke up with his arm around my neck. I thought he was gonna choke me or something. He ended up giving me a "noogie". I laugh about it now!!

I have had many, many late night romps with my husband after taking Ambien. The first few times it happened, I wouldn't even remember even having sex with him unless he happened to mention it the next day, but after awhile, it just became an expected occurrence. So much so that he would say, "Are you sure you don't need to take a pill tonight?" just about every night because he KNEW if I did he would get some! LOL!
I had taken Ambien on and off for several years and never had any issues until recently. I have done some CRAZY stuff like waking my husband up by running through the house swearing that aliens were trying to abduct our dog, I have stood over him shining a flashlight in his face in the middle of the night, cooked and consumed various different meals and halucinated a whole host of different things. Fortunately, the late night lovin' has more than made up for all the craziness he's had to deal with!

I wanted to search on this topic because lately I have had a lot of sex dreams, and wake up feeling like I worked out at the gym. My buttocks, thighs and stomach have that just worked out "burn" and I didn't even know how to start searching the Internet for this "thing" but now I know what it is. I'll be damned.

I'm 31 and I've done this for as long as I can remember. Always talked in my sleep too. I've recently grabbed my wifes breast and said "whats that, whats that." I've grabbed her below and said "let me get that." Nuts. I've woken up naked on top of her, sometimes dry humping, also viciously making out with her and even in the middle of sex. Now she just pushes me away. While this is all funny, I once woke up with my hand on someones chest punching the bed after dreaming I was fighting. That's scary stuff.

My ex-husband used to attack me physically in his sleep, especially if I came to bed after he was already asleep. Once he threw me against the dresser and then on the floor; I literally had to punch and kick him to get him off and when he finally woke up, he didn't know why he was bruised. No joke, it was so scary. Maybe I should give him a heads-up so his future relationships have a fighting chance (no pun intended).

It goes both ways; once my ex woke me up while she was giving me a blow job. We had screwd all night and then fell a sleep. However, she had to wake up and perform oral sex on me while I was sleeping. Point: Women can spoil a good night's rest as well.

I'm 29 now and my last girlfiend confessed that this is somthing that I have done with her. I have had a few occasions that I have woken up with her and I would be in mid thrust. She never complained but was the first and only one to bring this to my attention. I cant help but feel that she is not the first I've done this with. I've had what I though were vauge dreams of sex on nights I've had sex with other women but it's such a fog i really cant say. I consider myself a man of honnor but cant help feel ashamed in this situation. I've been fortunate to have always been with ( to my understanding two women in this situation), but what do I do if i find myself in a not so understanding situation?

My husband is a total sex somniac! I realized this after our 3rd month of dating when we were in Vegas after a long night of drinking. He woke me up, turned me around, and tried to have sex doggie style. I, of course, went along. ;) But it stopped when he was having a hard time putting it in. I couldn't figure out why (he was asleep). LOL. All of sudden he just went back to sleep after the unsuccessful try. The only reason he believed me was because he couldn't remember why he woke up naked. LOL. He said he never knew. We've been now married 3 years, and most of the time, I just let him go to it so I can see where it'll go. Sometimes it's just foreplay and others--all of it. I love it!
