Our parents have been telling us to "respect our elders" since we were in diapers. We think that courtesy should definitely be extended to elderly animals.Apparently, four Aussie teens didn't think so when they roughed up a 78-year-old blind flamingo at the Adelaide Zoo. The bird, known as Flamingo 1, sustained injuries to its head and beak. We had no idea that kids could be this cruel -- or flamingos this old. He's believed to be the oldest of his kind in the world.
After two days of recovery, the bird was returned to his habitat, where he was reunited with his companion of over 50 years.
The four attackers were arrested and have been charged with aggravated animal cruelty -- the first time ever in the state since new laws were recently passed. The teens, who ranged in age from 17 to 19, have been released on bail and will appear in court in the coming months.
The sad act has brought outrage among Adelaide residents -- many of whom have expressed their fury in AdelaideNow, the city's local newspaper.
We personally think that the kids should have to go back to the zoo's aviary, tied up, in their underwear and covered in bird seed.

This is awful. What was done to that poor flamingo, should be done to those evil kids.

I think they should be allowed to clean the elephant (and other large animal) enclosures for 6 months. Maybe that would teach them a lesson? I'd hope so.

They deserve the most savage justice--clearly what the Australian courts are NOT dispensing if they are out. They should never see daylight again.

What in heaven's name is wrong with these kids? How could any human being be that cruel to an animal? Throw the book at them and then make them work hundreds of hours cleaning up animal poop at the zoo.

I THINK THEY SHOULD MAKE THEM CLEAN THE LIONS INCLOSURE MAYBE THEY WOULDN'T MAKE IT OUT. ANYONE THAT COULD HARM AN INNOCENT ANIMAL DOESN'T HAVE A HEART!

No, if they were told to clean up the pens or the 'living areas' of other animals at the zoo, there would be too much chance they would find it cool and gratifying to 'beat up' those animals as well.
Imagine how their future girlfriends will feel, they'll get beat up like this too. This is the "in thing" and fun thing these days, how to treat 'living things' like garbage.

(To:Ceeee)EXACTLY right.I am so happy that you said that.I never would have thought that someone would have thought exactly what i think.I am a 15 yr old female from tennessee.I love animals...as a matter of fact,i am going to be a veterinarian for zoo's around tennessee.Other kids my age are smoking, drinking and hanging out at the mall.I am not doing any of those.I dont hang out at the mall because of the bad influences that are there. The kids there smoke pot, drink, vandilize stuff, steal, the list is endless! I dont want to be like that.I did go through that stage in life where i did steal...i almost started smoking, but never decided to drink.I decided that i didnt want to live my life like that.Another thing is that other females my age (and males) are having sex and getting pregnant and std's.My very cousin(female)got pregnant at 15 and she now has a baby girl. She now is strugling everyday wondering how shes going to feed it,buy it diapers,ect...I dont want to be like her.She was one of the crowd that hung out at the mall, smoked, drunk, vandailized stuff,ect...Its those kind of people that are so cold hearted. And as you said..they think that harming animals is fun.and you think this is bad...just go to www.youtube.com and look up videos of people harming animals...its horrible.

I'll tell you what's wrong with these kids. Their parents are what's wrong! If their idiot parents did their job and taught these a$$holes how to behave, the poor animal would have never been hurt. Tie up the parents along with the ba$tards and toss them to the lions!
