When it comes to re-purposing random household items, Amy Sedaris is the mad scientist of crafters. Her entertaining book, "I Like You," features dozens of recipes, as well as easy-to-do projects. Paint a rock to look like a baked potato? Yep! Use a hair extension as gift-wrap garnish? Absolutely! A winking-eye pillow made with pantyhose and lima beans? Genius! To honor Sedaris' ingenuity, we're giving away ten copies of the book, just released in paperback. Enter to win by leaving a comment below between now and November 14. Go ahead and tell us your favorite craft ideas or the strangest thing you've ever found a way to re-use. If you want to send us a picture, we're all ears, er, eyes. We'll choose ten commenters at random. (Click here for full contest rules.)
Then enjoy the clip below, in which Amy demonstrated the earrings (and, um, pasties), she made out of David Letterman's shoe tassels.

I must say I love the pasties. So much in fact I may have to figure out a way to incorporate them into my Halloween costumes tomorrow night!

i love amy sedaris!!! i just saw her todd oldham-designed vagina model on chelsea lately. hilarious! okay, maybe you have to see the episode to get out.
anyhow, here are some of my favorite repurposed items:
--- old smoky joe bbq grill (round kind) used as an herb garden planter
--- fed ex pouches used as lint rollers in the office (i put the pouch on as a mitt and just start patting away at my clothes.)
--- clean, unused maxi pads as the sticky things you put on hangers so your silky wide neck tops don't slide off

I'm going to be Rainbow Brite for Halloween, and I'm making a skirt out of paint samples. It's free and easy...unfortunately, I don't yet know how to wear it. At least it's creative.

My friends and I used to take tampons (the kind that "spread" out) and make ghosts out of them by drawing little spooky eyes. We were odd children.

My sister and I used to string together old soda can tabs to make costume jewelry for fun when money was tight in our family, and also you can use old dryer sheets to get hard-to-remove food grime off pots by letting them soak in some soap water in the pot.

This is so cool. Going into a recession, we will need to be re-purposing household items. We reuse cotton swab boxes for pencils, erasers, etc in drawers and on desks. Great ideas!

Love it!
What I like to do is go down town to buy remnant fabric. It is usually soooo cheap and you can make so many things. Side pillows, bed pillows, purses, shoe bags. I could go on... I love it!

I love making little amigurumi items and I stuff them with plastic easter basket grass.

As far as crazy crafts go, knitters have their kooks among them. Without a doubt, my absolute favorite knitting pattern shenanigans that I've ever seen involved one of the most popular online knitting e-zines, and a pattern for...ahem...edible unmentionables knitted from red lace licorice. Get a couple of knitters, a bottle or two (okay, more like three...) and a boring Saturday night, and we'll try just about anything!
