Anyone who thinks it's mostly men who commit adultery is in for a wake-up call. Researchers now say women -- particularly younger ones -- are on par with men when it comes to seeking greener carnal pastures. A University of Washington study found that about 15 percent of women under 35 had been unfaithful, up from 12 percent in 1991. (In the new study, 20 percent of men had strayed.) And the lifetime rate of infidelity for women over 60 rose from 5 percent to 15 percent in the same time span, while the numbers for older men went from 20 to 28 percent.
But researchers are scratching their heads over whether it's really more women cheating or just more coming clean about it. Scientists say it's tough to get women to admit to adultery -- a study published last year in The Journal of Family Psychology found that only 1 percent of 4,884 married women said they had been unfaithful during a face-to-face interview, while 6 percent admitted it on an anonymous computer questionnaire.
If more ladies really are unleashing their libidos elsewhere, researchers theorize that the cause could be everything from having careers that require them to work late hours to being able to connect with people electronically. Don't forget -- back in the 1950s when there was less cheating reported among women, most wives stayed home, which diminished their opportunities to seek out other partners.
Other factors leading to increased infidelity among women? The increasing frequency of sexless marriages, even among celebrity couples (whither Madonna and Guy Ritchie?), and the breakdown of stereotypes that women with multiple partners are slutty while mate-juggling men are studs (thank you, "Sex and the City"). Or maybe it's just the prevalence of one of these Top 10 Reasons Women Cheat.

Hot Bod Cold Heart
Mario Lopez Who knew that A.C. Slater was such a dirtbag? The buff "Dancing with the Stars" stud reportedly cheated on one ex-girlfriend with a Hooters girl, and his two-week marriage to Ali Landry ended when she learned of his bachelor party antics.
Barry King, WireImage.com
Jude Law He may be gorgeous (and who can resist that accent?) but not so hot was his cheating on then-fiancee Sienna Miller with the nanny to his kids. Miller and Law eventually broke up, and her downward rebound spiral led her into the arms of mangy Rhys Ifans.
Sony
Matt Damon Although he has denied it, Minnie Driver says she discovered she was dumped by watching "Oprah. Say what!? The "Sexiest Man Alive" told the talk show host he was no longer dating Driver; Driver claims it was the first she'd heard of their breakup.
Universal
Hugh Grant Who could forget the Hugh Grant scandal that rocked Hollywood in 1995? Grant was pulled over by LA police for lewd conduct with prostitute Divine Brown. Girlfriend Liz Hurley forgave him and even appeared on his arm at the premiere of "Nine Months" days after his arrest.
Dave Hogan, Getty Images
David Beckham What is it with married celebrities and the hired help? Although he has always denied it (and ok, so there's no proof), Becks was accused in 2004 of sleeping with then-personal assistant Rebecca Loos.
Milk Processor's of America
Chace Crawford We know two things about the "Gossip Girl" boy: He's a total hottie, and he dumped Carrie Underwood via text. US Weekly reported in April 2008 that the pair "mutually" parted ways via cellular phones.
Mark Von Holden, WireImage.com
Charlie Sheen Among other lowlights, Sheen 'accidentally' shot ex-fiancee Kelly Preston, spent thousands on madam Heidi Fleiss, and symbolically took a chainsaw to his wedding portrait with Denise Richards. Ew.
E.J. Camp / CBS
Ethan Hawke We were sad enough when this brainy babe's artsy-smartsy marriage to Uma Thurman ended. But to then shack up and have a baby with the nanny to his kids with the hot blonde? For shame!
Mirimax / Everett Collection
Ryan PhilippeAlthough never officially confirmed, rumors still swirl that Ryan Philippe's divorce from his all-American wife Reese Witherspoon had a little something to do with an on-set affair with actress Abbie Cornish, now his girlfriend. Hmm.
Frank Masi, Paramount
MC Harvey This UK recording artist was caught in the act with his wife's good friend. Who caught them? The other woman's then-boyfriend. Now that's some drama, folks.

Where has the media been? Living under a rock? Women have been cheating, ad nauseum, forever. Hello. Nothing new. Nothing unique. Now with this 'big push' for equal pay for equal work; great, but with that goes EQUAL work, no more guys helping you lift boxes to do your job. And when divorce time comes and women cheat; get out the big check book, baby. Equal means equal. Women that kill their husbands, no more 'hiding behind the he abused me bit'. Man up, if you are abused, LEAVE.

Frankly, I would rather men become less promiscuous than the other way around. Why is sleeping around, cheating/lying to your lover, and getting STDs a good thing?
Oh, wait. It's not.

Eve, why do you stay with a man who drinks all day and doesn't work? What are you getting out of this marriage? Love isn't enough for a successful marriage when it's as messed up as yours is. Can you go to counseling? If he won't go, go alone. At least you'll get some professional advice, which you desperately need. A marriage is more than just the absence of fighting; it's supposed to be a loving, growing relationship. He is supposed to be your soulmate. You must be desperately unhappy and, guess what? So is he, or else he wouldn't drink all day. He's an alcoholic and needs help, but you can't help him. He can only help himself. You don't say how old you are, but if you stay with him like this, remember one thing: you can never get back the time. Once your youth is gone, it's gone. Think about it. If he gets help and stops drinking and gets his life together, maybe you both have a chance to be happy. If not, you have to decide if you want to spend all your young years miserable like this or get out and rebuild your own life while you're still young. Aren't you worth more than this? Shouldn't you have the chance for a decent life? Think.

I don't know why any woman would WANT to be like a man. I always said that I loved being a woman and not having all the bad qualities that most men have. Nowadays though, women have become just like men. The numbers are rising for female inmates everyday in this country. Men were always known for vulgar language, but women have met that standard.as well. As far as the cheating....women have done it for years. Who do you think is with all the guys who cheat? Married men mostly go after married women for an affair.

Whether or not you cheat has nothing to do with your gender. It has everything to do with your lack of morals.

I spent and wasted time on online dating because get this, they have herpes. I usually draw interest and swap emails for a month or two. Then right before we meet I tell her my most embarrassing moment which is taking a Daisy Fuentes calendar autographed only to find out it was some MTV DJ named Davey Fuentes. Then they tell me their most embarrassing which is they have herpes. I say no thanks it'll never work out. This has happened to me in about a year's time span. So seems like herpes is more common than we think. These women tell me that they got herpes as their exs cheated on them and spread the disease to them. So there is a big price that cheaters pay. I'm thankful for these women that they opened up and told the truth. I'm also I'm glad that I didn't go on a first date and kiss them as I could have wound up with herpes. There are just so many diseases out there. When I find the right one, I'm going to be faithful.

I cheated only after being cheated on. He left, I was still married, cheated after 2 months apart, then he came back. Have been together now 14 years. Neither of us has done it since!

Tsk, tsk. Must we readers design your studies for you? Of course most women are smarter than to admit they are cheating. If you want to guess if
married women are cheating, ask voluble single men and married men how
many of their female partners, if any, are married. :) Most married
men are always willing to cheat, and all of the willing ones are 100
percent sure their wives dream of and sleep with them and only then.

I had an emotional affair for years, before it turned sexual with my closest work partner. Best friends turned into best sex friends. We got caught, got into trouble with our spouses and at work. We're not "allowed" to talk or see each other any more. I miss seeing him and talking to him desperately. I love my husband, but miss my best friend so much it hurts.
