Keep your pie hole shut if you're gonna talk about dieting: Yesterday kicked off Fat Talk Free Week, a five-day public awareness effort to stop women from talking bad about their own bods. The campaign is led by sorority Delta Delta Delta (Tri Delta), Seventeen Magazine, the National Organization for Women and other groups. Targeting women with videos and educational material, it's aimed at stopping the strive to be skinny. You're urged to grin instead of grimace when you glance in the mirror. NOW has also designated Wednesday as "Love Your Body Day." (Ironically, eating-disorder experts have long criticized sororities and teen mags for pushing girls toward negative body images.)
The effort's site offers some ideas on how to celebrate yourself, no matter your size -- like by having sex and indulging your creative talents.
While Hollywood is often blamed for perpetuating the super-skinny as ideal, research shows that the women in our lives play a huge role, too. A study published in the Archives of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine in June found that girls younger than 14 whose mothers had a history of eating disorders were nearly three times more likely than their peers to start purging at least weekly. Roughly 10 million U.S. women suffer from eating disorders, while 46 percent of nine- to 11-year-olds report "sometime" or "very often" being on diets.
