Some trends are easy to pull off (messy up-dos, spray-on tans, the grunge thing); others require dedication, commitment and the understanding that being chic is going to require looking, well, a little different. One of the hottest trends this fall is Dark Lips (would I lie?), and let's be clear: Not everyone can pull it off. When done correctly, you should evoke drama. Looking like the Evil Queen from Snow White? Pretty good. Resembling Marilyn Manson? Mais non.
The strongest dark-lipped statement was seen on the YSL runway (with matching inky-black mops!), but if that look is way too Halloween-y for every day, you've still got a few options.

Kat Von D Lightning Lip Gloss in Gunshine
This silver-gray metallic gloss is for those who may be slightly overwhelmed by the trend. It's sheer, but unmistakably black, so you can layer it on until you're comfy with the look. And, obviously, it's created by a tattoo artist, which has to count for at least a few street-cred points. ($18, Sephora)
Smashbox Wicked Lovely Gloss
You say "goth," Smashbox says "vampy" with a deep chocolate-plum gloss that's dark and yet see-through at once. Baby steps, fashionistas! Think of this gloss as the Gerber Graduates of the haute couture set: A matching lip pencil in the same hue is also available when you're ready to go deep. ($18, Smashbox)
YSL Gloss Pur Black
For the .002% of you who aren't freaked out by YSL's runway look, the gloss is available for non-black-bobbed heads for $28. As the price suggests, though, this is couture -- sit around too long wondering,"Yeah, but won't this color look sorta creepy at the office?" too long, and you'll miss the trend. ($28, YSL)
Tell us: What do you think about dark lips for fall -- gorgeous or just goth? Are there any other trends you're not quite sure how to wear?

I've actually tried the Kat Von D lipgloss and really like it. Consider I'm a fan of the darker shades of lip gloss than the lighter ones, I'm definitely all for this trend. And no, it's not goth at all.

I looove this trend. I think it is a little goth, but hey, I'm into that sort of thing sometimes.[:
Anyhow, if you're not afraid to add a little drama, this is an amazing trend in my opinion!

The "Click here to see how to go glam but stop short of goth" link doesn't work, it just takes you right back here.

if you are 50 or over forget dark lipstick (its making a comeback we did this when we were 30 and it was glam). dark casts shadows around your mouth and adds about 10 years at least to your age, plus it has the illusion of making your mouth smaller and skinnier. it's not a good thing. stick with pinks that has the opposite effect. or, don't say you weren't warned.
