As the financial freak-out continues to grip Wall Street by its balls, experts say that investors should stick to memaw and pepaw's ageless advice: Don't borrow too much and don't take too many risks. But risky business is exactly what many high-powered, testosterone-fueled guys in finance do naturally. Recent studies confirm that men in finance with high testosterone levels are more likely to err toward risky behavior, both in their investments and their lives.
Male traders with elevated levels of testosterone are more likely to exhibit physical signs of mania and aggression, such as yelling and punching. When big risks pay off, their bodies reward them with additional chemical surges. But winning streaks rarely last, and more often, these guys are set up for intense downfalls.
Says scientist and former trader John Coates, while testosterone makes people decide more quickly, it eventually impairs judgments and causes guys to pick fights, act recklessly and, um, look at more porn.
The takeaway? Listen to grandma, not your hyper-aggressive guy trader friend when you're making financial decisions.
Tell us! Do your "manly" friends take more financial risks?
