As self-proclaimed Diet Coke addicts, we were pretty excited about the winner of this year's Ig Nobel prize (for achievements that "first make people laugh, and then make them think"). According to the research that won the award, our favorite cola is also a pretty effective sperm killer. It's not strong enough to work as actual birth control (repeat: It does not work as birth control), but we're still quite proud to see it recognized by the scientific community. The news got us thinking -- besides spermicide, no cavities and caffeine highs, what else might Diet Coke be good for? Here's our list so far:
Cooking
Baste a ham in Diet Coke for an incredibly tender piece of meat, or make a yummy barbecue sauce by mixing it with an equal amount of ketchup. Also, try replacing the water, eggs and oil called for by your favorite cake mix with a can of Diet Coke -- it's supposedly super-tasty and low in calories. (Let us know how that goes.)
Cleaning
When you're out of regular household cleaner, go for the Diet Coke. It works on chrome (pour it on, then rinse off with soap and water), burned saucepans (boil it in them), toilets (pour it in), kettles (let it soak all day) and anything else with nasty buildup.
Starting your car
If your engine won't turn over, try pouring Diet Coke on the battery terminals -- the acid in the cola will eat away at the corrosion and might actually help get your engine going.
Tell us: Have you tried any of these alternate uses for Diet Coke? Got any others that have worked for you?

I had a roomate in college that his (angry) ex girfriend poured coke on the hood of his car at night. The next day it was a hot sunny day and the paint bubbled on the hood. Ruined the paint job.

While a senior at Calif., Irvine we had a rotation servive through a medical clinic in Watts section of L.A. One of the public health RN's told us that the exposure rate to STD's and pregnancy was 7 days a week in the 12-17 age group of females. In order to prevent a pregnancy the gilrs would shake up a SevenUp or other carbonated bottle of soda and use it as a douche. It was called a 7UP WhizBang. If no condom available the boys used Saran Wrap and a rubber band! This was in 1963, a long, long time beffore this modern study!

It's the carbonic acid in soda pop which does these things. BTW, Diet Coke contains aspertame, which is a toxin.

For those curious as to how it is used as a contraceptive I can attest to its effectiveness. Many years ago it was common to use a regular coke - diet stuff wasn't even thought of then. After some love making in the back seat of my 49 Ford the lady would step outside the car, shake a bottle of coke vigorisly, and insert it - you know where - and flush the sperm away. It worked, as I never had a lady in the PG way. We never bothered with a condom and safe sex was never thought about as we did not have the SD and AIDS problems back then. It was wonderful - and a lot of fun for me to remember the "good ol days".

I have a great recipe that I had tried many times that uses diet soda. Take a box of yellow cake mix and pour 1 can of diet soda, either Diet Coke or diet root beer, (my personal favorite) into a bowl, mix together until smooth. Spray oil on cake pan. Cover the bottom with pealed fresh or frozen peaches. If you use canned peaches, be sure to drain all the juice first. Pour the cake batter over the peaches and bake just like the box says, same temp and time. It is better than a peach cobbler. Yum, Yum!

I was web-surfing and this article caught my eye, as did some of the comments. I am a surgeon and I drink Coke, Diet Coke (doesn't taste bad at all), and live on Starbucks Mocha frappacinos in between. There is nothing in the diet soft drinks that will "eat" your stomach. Your stomach's hydrochloric acid is eating your stomach continuously; if your stomach did not constantly replace itself, it would literally eat itself up in a matter of minutes. Some foods may aggravate the acid production and increase the GERD symptoms--and that's not a fun thing to live with--but the Soft Drinks, and Diet Drinks, are truly no worse than many other things people thrive on. Caffeine can set off people as much as acid, and it could be the caffeine; I find it difficult to believe it's the basic soft drink.

Soda pop can steal bone calcium and harm teeth for starters. Also diet soda can lead to obesity due to the way the body reacts to artificial sweeteners. Please Doctor, look out for your patients at least even if you don't practice a healthy life style.

Oh, and as far as the spermacide, it may be as simple as the carbonation. It would be interesting to see a parallel study with something like Sierra Mist or Ginger Ale or just plain old Seltzer Water.

The article (igNoble Award) specifically stated regular coke. The sugar in regular coke was absorbed by the sperm and burst. They specifically stated that diet coke WOULD NOT work (no sugar). This re-write of the article changed it to diet coke. Be warned the media has reported this wrong. Look up IgNoble Awards.
Be warned, most reporters can't read or write. They certainly can't be expected to pay attention to pesky things like details.

From the study:
"Testing of various cola formulas on sperm motility using a trans-membrane procedure did not decrease motility to less than 70% control in a 1-hour period. Diet Coca-Cola had the strongest spermicidal effect followed by Classic Coca-Cola, Caffeine-free Coca-Cola and New Coca-Cola. Since there are no known substances in cola that effect cellular membranes, the results of these tests were not unusual. Other tests have been done using higher dilution of cola which could effect sperm motility and give different results for spermicidal potencies. The results show that cola has little if any spermicidal effect. Its use in postcoital douching is ineffective and could cause complications such as infection."
