We first heard about "My Fake Baby" -- a BBC doc about women who "care" for incredibly lifelike baby dolls -- in January, but (sigh) it only aired in the U.K. Tonight the film will finally be shown in the U.S., on BBC America. The women featured in the film spend hundreds of dollars on "reborns" -- dolls with beating hearts, tiny veins and other bizarrely realistic features -- and treat them just like actual babies, diaper changes and all. Check out the clip below, and you'll see why we've been so anxious to see this import in full.
If you're freaked out by Fake Babies, check out this gallery for more of the creepiest dolls we've ever seen.

I am a artist that makes these reborn dolls. this is a hobby and not cheap to do. It take many many hours of work to make one of these dolls. The goal is to make it as life like as possible.
There are many collectors out there that collect these dolls and many other kinds of dolls. A greiving person or a childless person only makes up maybe 1% of the buyers/collectors. People have collected different things forever and why is this so creepy?? Is collecting dead animals that have been stuffed for a throphy purpose wierd?? Is collecting bones, arrowheads, snake skins wierd??
My point is everyone is different. Cant we agree to disagree?? This is a art I like to call it huggable art.

I think it's nauseating. The whole idea is wrong. It's a mental/emotional illness and I can't even eat my lunch and watch the video at the same time. I'm honestly sitting at my desk eating a sandwich and cannot watch the video while eating.

Wow. That clip made me so very sad. I have had two miscarriages this year and understand how easy it could be to get attached to such a realistic looking doll. However, I know deep down it would only keep me from living in the real world and copeing with what has happened. Having said that who am I to say these women shouldnt have their new found comfort and love? I think compassion is the only way to go here.

Go to ebay and search on keyword "reborn" You'll be amazed. I wouldn't use the doll to replace a baby or whatever, but the artistry and workmanship involved in making these is just awesome.

Hi Julie and those interested in dolls:
Ignore the ignorant comments. Doll collecting has been around for so many years. Dolls made by artists are works of art. Those who collect them are not weird nor creepy people. Just like men who collect baseball cards, autographed balls, etc.,
There are 2 magazines: Dolls Magazine and Doll Reader where one can learn about the art of doll sculpts, what's new, different artists, etc..
Some companies that sell great dolls: Lee Middleton babies, Adora dolls
prices range less $100-$200 range. Then there are more expensive dolls: Anette Himstedt, Laura Tuzzio-Ross babies etc. You can type these names and get info.
Some great doll retail stores that I have used: Lanes collectibles, Samanthas dolls, doll connection store. They have dolls in all prices. The more expensive dolls are made by the artists, the less expensive dolls are copied by the artists. There are different types of mediums/materials: vinyl dolls, silicone dolls, silicone/mixed with vinyl (less expensive), and porcelain dolls.
Marie Osmond has a doll line: both vinyl and porcelain. Go to QVC.com and you will see them. She will be live on QVC either 10/5 or 10/6. Check out the show and you'll learn more.
Lastly reborn dolls are dolls that have been produced by a company and repainted by people who like to make them look more realistic.
Ebay sells reborn dolls as well as other dolls.

I am a reborn artist that makes these beautiful little life like babies...
There are many reasons people buy these wonderful works of art, and not all people treat them like they were portrayed. All my personal reborns sit/lay in a baby basket, mostly for show....buy my 6 year old daughter LOVES to hold them
They are also WONDERFUL for the elderly. I have sold reborns to nursing homes, and the residence just love to hold them. Think of the memories these little reborn babies can bring back for a little old lady sitting in a chair rocking the doll. That is what most of the people in the nursing homes do with them.
My reborn website is www.freewebs.com/littlelovesnursery/
I have shipped reborns all over the world, and I just love making each and every one :-)

I will be selling Lee Middleton dolls, they range in costs from 15 dollars into the thousands for the reborns or special orders.
These dolls are life like, some are breathing newborns. They weigh close to a real baby. Some of this dolls can be found on ebay, and the 'reborns' cost 300 plus. Bids on ebay go up into the thousands for these babies.
I will open my store 10/10/08 selling Middleton dolls at www.mothermagooscollections.com
Good luck hunting for the right baby.
