Bad news: The jerk in the next cube may bring home a bigger paycheck than you do -- and it's got everything to do with his craptastic attitude. A new study from the University of Florida found that sexist guys make up to $14,000 more than their more equal-minded counterparts. The U of F study interviewed 12,686 people four times over two decades. Subjects were asked whether they believed a woman's place is in the home, whether employed wives lead to juvenile delinquency and if they believe men should be the sole breadwinners.
Men who answered in the affirmative to all three questions were classified as "traditional." Those men, it was found, earned significantly more than men who disagreed with the statements. Study co-author Timothy Judge said the results not only showed that attitude affects earnings, but that "when workers' attitudes become more traditional, women's earnings relative to men's suffer greatly."
There is some good news coming out of the study, though: Females who held "feminist" views earned around $1,500 more than women who held barefoot-and-preggo views about women's roles in society. So get some girl power, ladies, and you'll get a bigger paycheck!
