Modeling is the advanced art and science of looking good in a photograph. Outside of the insular world of Fashion Academia, one might think that our specialized skill set is not applicable anywhere, but, dear reader, I've just had a look at your latest set of holiday snaps and, um, was that you on the beach in Thailand with your friends? Or was it your quadruple-chinned, cross-eyed grandma?

You probably aren't a hideous gargoyle in real life, so I think you'll agree with me that the camera, be it a fashion photographer's Leica or your co-worker's mobile phone-cam, is a mysteriously powerful tool of uglification. Years of study, i.e., scrutinizing hundreds of professional photographs of myself whilst wailing, "What the hell happened to my face/neck/thigh/eye/toe here?!" have caused me to develop the following checklist of directions for the layperson who wants to look better in pictures. Read on, oh vain ones.
