Groundbreaking research in the science of love: A potential sweetheart is more likely to be interested in you if you smile, look at them and act generally, well, interested.

Researchers at Obvious College, er, the University of Aberdeen discovered that a good-looking face is more appealing when it exhibits positive "social cues." So, not just smiling, but smiling at you.

Ben Jones, one of the study authors, told The Independent that the research "highlights how social cues, which signal the extent to which others are attracted to you, also play a crucial role in attraction."

While the study suggests minimizing your chance of rejection by identifying "individuals who are most open to interacting with you," the BBC takes it a step further and posits that "singletons could use [these] findings to help prevent wasting time chatting up people who were clearly not interested."
