A tug-of-war of sorts goes down on movie night at my house. Do we watch a chick flick or a dick flick? Will we settle at a contingent happy medium and just go for some generic comedy? Will one of us break the DVD player in hopes of not having to watch a horrible movie picked by the other? Truth be told, movie night with my husband, Adam, has always been a challenge, even back when we were dating and supposedly on our best behavior. If the movie focused on a love interest being pursued, a woman embracing her life and friendships, or the lead character following her dreams, he suddenly became preoccupied.
Asking him to watch a movie without some sort of macho display of masculine dignity (or, often, indignity) was like asking him to swim with sharks. It was not happening. Which is why I've watched "In Her Shoes," "The Princess Diaries" and "Little Women" all by myself.
In his defense, I loathe action movies and any film that concentrates solely on a sporting event. I can stare at the screen, but really my mind is off thinking about rare and delicate things like unicorn tears and rainbows. "Did you see THAT?!" he'll ask enthusiastically, even going so far as to rewind the clip where the stunt car flips a bazillion times or the star running back makes a touchdown.
"Um ... ," I'll reply, while perusing whatever glamorous women's magazine arrived in my mailbox that week, possibly inserting a nod.
Fortunately, we're both scared of horror movies. While Adam will not admit to being slightly spooked by the films, I see him shaking in his proverbial boots when it comes to anything featuring paranormal activity or gruesome murder. We once watched "Saw" after hearing rave reviews from friends and family, and I swear he didn't sleep for weeks. And when it came time for "Saw II," he was a no-go.
Truthfully, when movie night arrives, the only thing we can agree upon is loads of buttery popcorn and a great comedy flick. I can't tell you how many times I've watched "Superbad" or how many times I saw "Step-Brothers" in the theater. I'll try my best not to quote either of them.
These days, I just save the chick flicks for night viewing when he is out with his friends or for movie night with my friends. What sort of movies are you and your guy watching? Is picking the movie a battle, or is it easy?

I'm not very picky, unless it is a horror film I'll watch just about anything. Perhaps movie night should be replaced with something else, like game night, just a thought =).
